Chapter Two
Brooklyn woke up in a panic, scrambling to clearly see the time on her alarm clock. Besides her bedding, it was one of the only other things she’d gotten set up in her bedroom after staying up half the night to organize the rest of the house. She'd just had the best sleep of her life, and not even one bad dream. She could hardly believe it was eleven-thirty in the morning already. She fell backward down into her pillows and covered her head.
"Maybe this is actually going to work out."
She'd always been hesitant to be positive about anything in her life after the serious blow up with her ex. Staying as far away as possible never seemed like enough of a safeguard before but today just felt different, she couldn't explain it.
Of course, that didn't mean she was going to drop her guard altogether because she didn't trust him. He was dangerous and scared the shit out of her. That's why she was following through with security cameras outside. Only having security on the inside wasn’t enough. Not even she was completely aware of all he was really capable of and the smartest thing was to be able to see him coming. She wondered if they would let her have the ability to monitor the cameras herself.
Anyway, today was Saturday and she was going to enjoy the day and the start of her new life. The weather outside was supposed to be great, she could already see the sun shining through the bedroom blinds. She had a great little place to live in a quaint town. She even had a new job to start Monday morning. This was how life was supposed to be. If only she could get out of her own head and stop worrying so much.
It was time for her to start living.
Brooklyn threw off the covers and climbed out of bed. After only a second or two of panicked hesitation, she opened the blinds in her bedroom and took a deep breath, determined not to fall into another nightmare, made the bed and went into the bathroom for a quick shower. She still had more unpacking to do and might even take a trip into town.
As she lathered her hair to one of her favorite tunes, the music stopped and a call rang through.
“Not good timing. Holy crap.”
Brooklyn hurried to rinse the shampoo from her hands and face, but by the time she reached around the shower curtain to grab her iPhone, it stopped ringing.
“Damn it.”
She swiped to access her missed call which registered The Watchers, the security firm she’d hired to outfit the house she was buying. She placed it back on the toilet seat and moved back under the water to rinse. She’d call them back when she was done.
Brooklyn climbed from the shower, grabbed her towel, and wrapped it around her midsection when a knock came at the door. Without a thought, she left the bathroom and headed for the front door.
“Who is it?”
“Sorry for the interruption, it’s Wyatt Collins from The Watchers. I’m here for an installation.”
“You were supposed to be here last night.”
“Yeah, I was, but it was late. My partner Dane Abbott was supposed to let you know I would be around today instead.”
“I don’t’ think I got that call.”
“I can come back another time if you’d rather?”
Brooklyn unlocked the door and slowly opened it to a man standing on the front porch.
“Hi. I’m Brooklyn. Come on in. Sorry about that.”
She stood aside for him to walk into the house.
“Listen, if it’s a bad time, I can come back.”
He was looking oddly at her. Was there something going on that she wasn’t understanding? When she looked down at herself, she realized she was standing in front of this stranger with only a towel around her.
“Oh shit, I’m so sorry.”
She wrapped her hands around her chest and midsection, making sure her towel wasn’t gaping in any spot.
“Let me go change, I’ll just be a minute.”
She ran into the bedroom, leaving him standing at the front door.
“Holy crap, how could I be so stupid. Who does that? Jesus his voice was like butter, it just drew me in. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
