I groaned. So much for thinking that things were going smoothly between us. If we started down this road, it would only end in a fight. I wasn’t in the mood to battle with him, not after what we just shared. “I start on Friday.”

“Not happening.”

I wrinkled my nose. “I guess we’ll see who wins on Friday,” I replied, keeping my voice light.

His arms only tightened around me. “You make it damn difficult to keep you safe.”

“It’s not like you won’t have someone watching me every second.”

“True.” His chin dropped to my shoulder.

We stood under the stars, just the two of us with the moon as company. His arms stayed wrapped around me. I hadn’t felt peace like this in months, and I didn’t want it to end. I was half tempted to ask him to sneak into my room and hold me, just so I could get some damn sleep tonight. I was so worn out and exhausted. But as the darkness of the night grew, Brock untangled his arms and said goodnight, leaving me alone. And I let him leave. My eyes clung to him until he disappeared.
