“Honestly, I was considering it.” As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Avery regretted them.

Mr. Reece chuckled. “No worries. Honesty is something I’m very fond of in an employee.”

Whew.

“Please… take a seat.”

Avery sat gingerly, hoping his body would calm. Across the desk, Mr. Reece examined some papers.

“So, no experience in accounting?” He glanced down again. “Except for some bookkeeping at this restaurant… where you also wait tables?”

“Finding a job isn’t as easy as I’d assumed,” as a beta. Most accounting positions favored alphas with degrees, for some reason. He’d been lucky to get what he had.

“Betas tend to be second-class citizens in the world of finance. Bookkeepers, sure… but accounting positions usually get taken up.” Mr. Reece smiled, pushing his glasses up his narrow nose.

Avery sighed with relief.“Exactly.”

Mr. Reece smiled his way. “Well, it pleasantly surprised me to see your application for the position. We see too few betas coming our way. Particularly for that department.”

“Forensic accounting was my favorite class throughout my college experience.”

Reece sat back, grinning. “I’ve always viewed it as tedious and time-consuming.”

“It’s a mystery. You’re trying to solve it, and you use numbers to do that. What could be better?”

“I spoke to several of your professors. They seem to think I’d be a fool not to bring you in as our intern.”

Avery felt his ears grow red. “This would be my dream job.”

Mr. Reece lowered the pages in his hand and focused on Avery. “So… tell me a little about yourself.”

Avery spent the next twenty or so minutes in conversation with his potential new boss. By the end, he felt sure he’d made a good impression. Hopefully, it was enough to get him hired.

“Well, I still need to review all the candidates information and discuss with my partner. I hope to have a decision made soon after I return from my trip.” Mr. Reece rose, again offering a hand.

Avery stood. And several droplets of slick leaked from him. He blanched, taking the man’s hand.

“I appreciate the time, Mr. Reece. Thank you,” he said, backing toward the door, fearful he’d made another mess.

Reece gave him an odd look, but smiled through it.

He escaped as carefully as he could and marched straight for the bathroom—looking no one he passed in the eye. Once inside, he found a miniscule spot on his pants, but nothing major. He cleaned himself off and headed outside, grabbing another trolley home.

More slick eased… and more.

A couple of alphas on the trolley turned in his direction, their stares clearly stating the obvious.

Avery was in danger.

He reached for his phone with a shaking hand and dialed the only person he could think of. Rohan. “I’m in the AQ… and I’m having an issue. Alphas are noticing.”

“How far are you from J&A?”

He cast a glance around. “Maybe two or three blocks.”

“I’ll meet you at the entrance. Run if you have to.”

As soon as he hung up and slid the phone into his pocket, he stumbled off the trolley. Two alphas exited as well. He turned and dashed down the street… and the pair followed.
