“Oh well, I was out-of-town, getting the rest of my stuff from school, when I had heard about what happened with Bert and all, so I wanted to come and check on you,” Daniel says, as his eyes keep darting over to me.

“I’m fine. Thank you, Daniel.” Brynn says.

“I was also hoping for another date, but…” Daniel says.

“Sorry, but Jasper and I are back together.” She says, and I don’t even hide the smirk on my face.

Daniel nods. “Guess it’s easier to date, when he’s right here all the time.”

I narrow my eyes at him. I didn’t like his tone with that one. So, I stand up and move to Brynn’s side, wrapping my arm around her waist.

“Also helps we have a history,” I tell him, smiling.

He gives us a strained smile, before nodding.

“Well, I wish you two the best. See you around.” He says and heads back inside towards the lobby.

When the door closes, Brynn turns in my arms to look at me.

“You didn’t have to do that.” She says, fighting a smile.

“I didn’t like his tone.” He says.

“Jasper, even if there was no you, I wouldn’t have accepted a second date. I was so freaking bored.” She groans and buries her head in my chest.

I pull her close and kiss the top of her head.

“Well, there is me, and I’m not going anywhere. You are kind of stuck with me. But Lin will pay for setting you up on that date.” I tell her.

She giggles, but I feel it against my chest more than I hear it.

“Let’s go in and get ready for The Sunset event,” I say.

It’s gotten even bigger, since we can now use the beach for it. Each one is different, so we have to adjust to make sure everything is set up.

But it’s all worth it, because during every event, I get to hold Brynn, as we watch the sun go down. It’s my favorite way to end each day.

Chapter 28

Brynn

The season is in full swing, and it seems each day blends into the next. Jasper always finds ways to spend time with me, no matter how busy we are. Then, every night, he’s in my bed. He’s even taken over part of my closet.

It’s been over a week, since Nate came to tell us about Bert, the former mayor. Josh has now taken over as interim mayor and has approved our permit for the villas. We will break ground at the end of July, which is the middle of the season.

Kade made the contractor promise not to mess with the beach, so we can continue doing The Sunset events. We just have to go around the long way via the beach. I don’t think guests will complain about a walk alongside the ocean.

I just finished a meeting with the contractor, Kade, and Lin, when I walk back into the lobby, and I’m not prepared to have the breath knocked out of me.

I find Jasper, sitting on one of the couches next to a boy, who can’t be more than thirteen. Their backs are to me, allowing me to lean on the registration desk and listen to them.

“I’m here with my dad and his new girlfriend.” The boy says. “They forgot about me and went on some all-day boat trip.”

My heart breaks for this boy. The father should be soaking up all the time he can get with his son.

“Well, I’m the chef here, and we’re about to get ready to serve lunch. Would you like to come with me and see how a real kitchen works?” He asks.

The kid turns to look at Jasper, and even from here, I can see his whole face light up.
