“Why is Ravencroft forbidden from entering our home?” Noel whined.
Reese crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Because I have decided on what is best for our family.”
Noel cried out. “This is unfair.”
“One day you will understand.” He moved to sit behind his desk. His action displayed his declaration as final.
“Mama?” Noel pleaded.
Mama hugged Noel. “I am sorry, my dear. I cannot argue your case against your brother until he informs us why he has made this decision. Calm down while we listen to his explanation.”
Reese folded his hands on top of the desk. His mother thought it was a simple misunderstanding that provoked him to make his demands. He looked around the room at his family, and remorse settled over him. They would all fall victim to the mistakes of his past. It was time to explain the letter he had received and how he would handle matters. He noticed Eden had not joined them.
“Where is Eden?” Reese asked Evelyn.
Evelyn sat down in a chair near his desk. “She is helping Rogers with a slight issue.”
“What issue?”
Evelyn folded her hands in her lap. “A guest arrived, and she is helping the person settle.”
“What guest? I gave Rogers an order,” Reese growled.
“We can discuss the guest later. Please tell us why you behave like the world has ended.” Evelyn gave her husband a look to continue.
Reese sighed, not wishing to argue with his wife. “Very well.”
“I do not care what Reese says. I am of age and no longer require his permission,” Noel declared before running from the study.
Mama cried after her. “Noel?”
“Let her go, Mama. Give her a moment to herself and allow Reese to explain,” Graham urged.
Mama pointed her finger at Reese. “Stop your stalling and proceed. We are all grown adults and do not need coddled. You cannot allow these gentlemen to court your sisters and then withdraw your consent without an explanation.”
“I very well can. And you will agree with my decision once you hear why,” Reese stated smugly.
“Heaven forbid a man’s arrogance,” Mama muttered.
Evelyn chuckled. She couldn’t help herself. Her mother-in-law’s comment helped to ease the tension. Graham joined in with her laughter, and Reese smirked. However, Maggie’s plea reminded them of the severity of their dilemma.
“Please tell us the reason for your anger,” Maggie requested quietly.
