Chapter 38

Uriel

Igroanedintothesheets, my fists twisting the bedding as I tried to get up. The last thing I remembered was eating an enormous German chocolate cake with vanilla icing on the side. It was so good, I swear I could still taste it on my lips. My belly was completely full, full of all the sugary things I had been wanting since arriving here.

Luci’s family ate way too much meat and veggies, it was beyond disgusting. I still haven’t found the magic cabinet in their kitchen, not that Luci would let me slip away. He told me if I ever left our room again without telling him I’d get my ‘cupcake’ spanked.

I giggled aloud. He would never do that. He is my Luci and he wouldn’t dare try.I bit my lip looking around the room.Well, maybe he would, he did do some naughty things in the hallway.

Sitting up and wiping the sleep from my eyes, I find myself in my old bedroom. The white and baby pink the room even brighter than I remembered because the large plant that covered the window wasn’t there. I tugged the duvet closer until Mom came into the room holding a large tray of chocolate chip cookies.

My mouth watered until I realized I shouldn’t be here. I should be with Luci, and I was still mad at Mom!

“What’s going on?” I muttered as Mom sat down in her favorite chair. Every night she read me a story, but I’m twenty-five years old now and don’t need such a thing; I just needed Luci.

“Where is Luci?” Mom sighed, trying to ignore me as she turned on the lamp. The cookies looked warm and gooey, I could almost see the steam rise above the melted chocolate chips, and the milk to the side had a thin layer of condensation coating the glass.

“This is a dream, Uriel. I did not take you from your mate.” My head shot up to see if I misunderstood something. She chuckled, picking up a cookie and putting it to her lips. “Yes, Uriel. I accept him as your mate; your father practically demanded it.” A sigh of relief left me as I reached for a cookie.

“I know you will never understand the things I did: the plants, the secrets, keeping you hidden. I thought what I was doing was for the best—for you and me. If I failed to raise my daughter, I failed to uphold my title as the Goddess of Marriage and Family.” Swallowing the cookie heavily, she looked away.

“You found that in me, Uriel. Your power is growing stronger and faster since the poison is now leaving your body. You give comfort; it’s part of your grace.” Mom’s eyes began to water. “I failed you as a mother, my sweet one. I hope one day I’ll be able to forgive myself. Your father and I love you very much, and we want to stop whatever evil is coming. I can’t see you hurt.” Shaking her head, she stood up and sat on the bed beside me, petting my hair.

“My sweet Uriel, I love you to the moon and back. I hope you can understand. When you have children of your own, one day, maybe you will—or maybe I am just really messed up.” Mom sniffed, holding back her tears. “That is probably why I was unable to have more children, because of what I did to you. The fates’ retribution for going about this the wrong way.”

Putting back the unbitten cookie, I held onto mom. The words I said earlier were a punch in the gut to her. Mom had always wanted more children, especially someone for me to play with. I stabbed her and twisted the knife so she could feel how I felt.

That wasn’t very nice of me.

“I—” Mom put her finger to my lips.

“I am not mad at you,” she sighed. “I never was, and I deserved it.”

“Uriel!” I could hear Luci’s voice ring through the dream. I clutched my mom tighter: I didn’t want her to go now. She just said it was okay to be with Luci.

“I bless your union with Lucifer, son of Hades and Ember.” Mom’s hand glowed as she touched the top of my head. “May your bonding and life together be fruitful.” I felt the warmth spread from my head to my toes as Mom rose from the bed.

“It isn’t often that I bless supernatural couples anymore, not since Selene began mating their souls. I try to concentrate on pure, loving humans,” Mom chuckled. “But this pairing with my own daughter, I believe it is deserving.”

“Mom?” I reached out to touch her again, but her back turned to head towards my old bedroom door.

“I love you, Uriel, no matter what happens.” Before I could watch her walk out the door, I was shaken until I awoke in Lucifer’s arms.

“Uriel!” Luci pulled me to him as my eyes opened. My eyes scanned the room, everywhere but Luci’s eyes, until he moved my chin to look at him. “You kept saying, ‘Mom,’ over and over. I thought she had come to you in a dream to try to take you.” Luci gripped me tighter, afraid I was leaving.

“I’m not leaving you,” I giggled. “Mom did visit me. She blessed our mating and union.” Luci’s eyes raised in skepticism, but I continued to nod my head gingerly. “Yes! She did!” Luci shook his head before gently letting me go.

“She wouldn’t change her mind that fast; it’s surely a trick,” Luci growled. I bit my lip, not wanting to argue back, but I needed to be heard.

“Mom didn’t lie,” I growled out. “I would have felt it! She was telling the truth! I even felt the warmth from the blessing she gave us.” Luci’s naked back faced me as he hung his legs off the bed, his hand repeatedly running through his dark brown hair.

“I want to believe you,” Luci shook his head. “I do, but we still need to be cautious.” I hummed, not wanting to fight anymore.

Mom was telling the truth, not unless I can’t feel lies in a dream. I don’t understand my powers well enough to know if that was true.

Luci stood from the bed; his gray joggers hung low on his hips while walking across the room. Putting on a black shirt, he opened the bathroom door and waved for me to follow. “I need to speak with my father. He’s cast a spell so that no apparitions can appear. Don’t go to sleep because it doesn’t work for dreams. She can’t take you from me—no one can,” Luci growled. His black fists touched the door marring its surface with burn prints.

How many doors do they have to replace around here?
