“See you next week,” he says with a wink.
“What was all that about?” Sadie whispers.
“We’re doing a research project together,” I say.
“Probably a good thing,” she says. “I heard he was the one who compelled Cain to jump. When’s your paper due?”
“Right before final exams,” I say.
“Well, that buys you a little time,” she says. “Come on, you need to take one night off. Nobody’s ever been murdered on a weekend.”
I raise my eyebrows. “Is that true or are you just saying it to make me feel better?”
“Is it working?” she asks.
“A little,” I admit.
“Then it doesn’t matter,” she says.
I laugh and fall into step alongside her. The next few weeks will be bumpy, but if I get that pass, it’ll all be worth it.
