She’d be at risk of me giving her all of who I am, good and bad.
And I’m not sure she’d accept or want everything about me.
“I don’t know.” One thing I loathe the most is self-doubt. Yet when it comes to Cassie, I seem to find an abundance of it within myself.
“Yeah, you do. You need to see her, find out what she said to the detective. If you do that, you’ll know how she feels about you. You’ll know if she trusts you.”
“Even if she didn’t tell him about me, about that night, it doesn’t mean she trusts me.”
“Why would you think that?”
“It could just mean that she’s afraid of me,” I reason, the unshakable possibility. It’s the one thing I’ve feared all week.
“Well, if you don’t confront her, you’re never going to find out.”
“Maybe I don’t want to.”
“Bullshit, Brett. You need to know. You can’t let her leave without finding out the truth. You can’t let the best thing that ever happened to you just walk away. Kid yourself all you want, but I know you know that, bro.”
“Fuck you.”
“Yeah, okay.” He chuckles, shaking his head as he leaves the room.
Chapter Twenty-Four
“Here are the files you asked for.”
Matthew stands at my doorway, holding out the final proofs I requested.
“Thank you.” I take them.
“They turned out great. Blush Works will be pleased with the finished product, and the marketing surveys are really getting some positive results.”
“Great.”
He clutches his satchel bag. “You know, Miss Redmon, I’m here for you. Whatever you need, just ask.”
Feeling guilty that I haven’t utilized him as I should, I glance at the pile of folders on the table. The company assigned Matthew to me to help lighten the load while I’m here. The part of me that needs to be in constant control has rejected the offering.
Poor Matthew. I remember what it was like to be in his shoes. I worked my ass off to get where I am today. And here I am, limiting his chances.
I’m a bitch.
“You know…” I walk over to the table and pick up the folder of one of our new accounts. “Why don’t you take these,” I hand them to him. “It’s what I have so far on Hydra Skin. Let me know what you come up with.”
A smile spreads over his face as his brown eyes twinkle. “Thanks.” He takes the folder, flashing his eyes at it like I just handed him the keys to the kingdom. “I won’t let you down.”
“I’ll hold you to it.”
Smiling ear to ear, he nods. “Hey, did you make a decision yet about taking the position here when the company goes live?”
“You know about that?”
“Yeah, I heard Erica talking to the regional office about it.”
“I really like New Hampshire.”
“Yeah, but it’s always sunny here.” He grins with his arms in the air.
