Dax placed the phone on speaker so we could hear Ansel speaking.
“Just like the group you encountered when you got back to Texas, another group showed up here with the intent of capturing Regina. The one I just tortured claimed that he didn’t know who DG6 or the Dominquez family was. I haven’t decided what to believe yet. This could possibly be a group left over and following old orders but be careful, in case we’ve missed something or someone,” Ansel warned, spiking my stress.
Hearing the update was disheartening. It meant we weren’t out of the woods where DG6 was concerned. How deep did this order to capture us run? Was it over? Were we ever going to return to a normal life? Were we going to have to leave Texas or be stuck glancing over our shoulders the rest of our lives?
“Fuck,” Laura uttered under her breath at Ansel’s news. Her response gave me pause.
One measly fuck was all that Laura had to offer in response to the news Ansel had delivered. She appeared to be the Laura I knew, but she certainly wasn’t acting like her. She was too quiet.
“Are you okay?” I asked, concerned and already blaming Dax for what might be wrong.
“Yes. You think this DG6 mess is ever going to be over?” The perplexed expression on her face was hard to discern.
“I hope so. You heard Ansel. The guys in Cali after Regina may have been left over from before they killed their targets. Regina believed that we were the women that Sorio had an interest in when she and Aaron were on that farm, asking after our ashes. We don’t know how many teams of men he could have deployed to look for us. After Regina went missing, he probably sent out more.”
“And people think I’m crazy,” Laura uttered. “That sick son-of-a-bitch wanted to kidnap us to burn us, probably alive, for our ashes that his sick ass would probably masturbate on.”
“Okay. Okay. Laura, I don’t want to think about what that crazy man wanted with us. Aaron killed him. Now, we have to pray that the guys have taken care of whoever remains in his wake.”
I pinned Laura with a firm gaze, and she returned with a muted expression, playing poker face with me. “So, you and Dax, huh?”
She threw up her hands. “Please don’t ask me about that man. I don’t want to talk about him.”
“So, like I was saying. You and Dax. How? How the hell did he convince you into a relationship?”
“No! No! No!” Her face was scrunched, and she was ready to rip me apart. The guys glanced back at her yelling at me, and I fanned them away with a playful smile.
“First, it’s not a relationship. We’re fucking. And that’s bad enough. When this mission is over, we’ll go our separate ways. Finished. Complete. Done.”
I didn’t think for a minute she believed what she’d just said.
“Well, I’m being honest with myself. I like Luke. I like him a lot. I know I just met him. I understand that under stressful situations, things happen that normally may not, but I don’t think I can be finished and done with him after this is all over. It has taken me all these years to find someone who can glance past my tits and ass to find me.”
A deep sigh rushed from her as she gave me her mothering eyes. “Bev, I’m telling you now. These men are used to having women at their disposal. Once this mission is over, they will be in the wind, no matter what they’re whispering in our ears now. Didn’t I warn you to stay away from Mr. Big? I’m surprised your ass can walk with all that damn screaming and cursing and knocking and bumping I heard.”
My hand covered my mouth, horrified even as I failed to keep a smirk off my face.
“You heard us? I’m so embarrassed.” My hands hid my hot face.
“You should be embarrassed.” She playfully shoved my shoulder. “The shit I heard had me blushing, and I’m not the blushing type.”
Her smiling gaze let me know she was teasing.
“Luke, you’re so big, you’re stretching me to my limits, don’t stop, right their baby, take it out so I can feel you sliding back in,” she goaded, repeating some of the statements I couldn’t deny I’d been shouting last night, especially by the third round.
My face was hot with embarrassment, but I managed to drop my hands to gather a few words.
“I’ve been in a drought for nearly a year, Laura. Do you blame me?”
“No,” she replied, surprising the hell out of me. I glared at her, unblinking.
“I can see that he makes you happy,” she admitted with a smile teasing her lips. “It also seems he’s head over heels, so be careful. You don’t want to create yourself a stalker. I say we have fun while it lasts, build a few good memories and move the hell on when this is over.”
I nodded, but I didn’t think Luke was the only one head over heels. I was coo-coo for Coco Puffs and wanted to be under and around the man every chance I got.
