Beverly remained quiet, likely sensing I wasn’t going to let Kadeem near her until I was ready. The tension between him and me filled the room and threatened to blow the roof off the place.

I lifted my gaze from his and put it on the two armed men he had standing at the entrance, awaiting his order to take me out of need be. My gaze dropped from his men and zeroed in on Kadeem’s strong glare, letting him know that I wasn’t deterred by his men or his position of authority.

Our standoff drew gazes in our direction although we weren’t speaking a word to each other. Beverly’s fingers dug deeper into my arm, but she remained silent.

“I’m not a fucking threat,” he husked out through tightened lips and gritted teeth. “Beverly is family,” he offered, his jaw ticking as he glared at me with unrestrained anger bounding from him. He wasn’t used to being denied or disobeyed, and my unrelenting behavior was more of a threat to his ego than anything else.

If he couldn’t sit his ego aside long enough to protect what he’d vowed to, it meant he wasn’t truthful to his word. If he couldn’t control his anger, he didn’t need to be around Beverly. I didn’t budge. I didn’t relax my stance or pull my gaze from his until the veil of his anger dissolved.

As soon as I allowed my hand to drop from Beverly’s waist, she let go of my arm and stepped around to my left shoulder. Dax and Laura were rushing in our direction at a rapid speed, but it was unnecessary.

“Hey, Kadeem,” Beverly’s sweet voice sounded. He spoke to Beverly without dropping his gaze from mine. “Hey, Bev,” he greeted, his tone back to its normal timbre. At the realization, I aimed a positive glance at Beverly before I stepped away from Kadeem to allow them time to talk.

“Where the fuck do you and Laura keep finding those suicidal-ass white-boys?” I heard him ask Beverly behind me before I allowed a smirk to glide across my lips.
