My eyes focused, catching on to the fact he wasn’t asleep. He was sitting in the dark, staring at me sleeping. I didn’t know if I was frightened or flattered, but I was glad to see him.
“Did you have any trouble?” I inquired as I eased up from the couch—his bed—until he and Dax decided on whatever guard duty measures they’d worked out.
“No. None,” was all he volunteered before he laid his head back, finally breaking the stare he’d had locked on me for who knew how long.
Now that Luke was okay, I could focus my stress on the incident at the airport, since Dax suspected we had been followed there before we departed for Cali. He’d even gone so far as to check Laura for bugs again, although I was sure he just wanted to get his hands on her.
He had informed us our flight was not registered, so they’d had no idea where we’d gone and had likely staked out the private airport to spot us returning. This encounter had reiterated the fact we weren’t dealing with low-level thugs. They were using viable resources to find us just as we’d used ours to take out one of their leaders.
Dax and Luke didn’t seem bothered the DG6 threat remained a factor. It almost appeared they were glad for the continued danger that lurked. I, on the other hand, was scared out of my wits for them and myself.
My feet kissed the gleaming floor as I eased off the couch and inched closer to him. His head lifted at my approach. The light shimmering from the television gave me a glimpse of the weariness reflected in his gaze.
“You can have your bed. I kept it warm for you,” I stated fighting the urge to reach out and touch him. What was wrong with me? I was never this forward with men.
The smile that filled his face warmed me to the core and validated my unusual level of forwardness.
“Thank you, Beverly. I appreciate it.” He stood, towering over my five-foot-eight frame. I enjoyed the height difference—loved that I, who often looked a man eye-to-eye, had to crane my neck up to one.
Apparently, I could use only one body part at a time. Since my eyes were in use, my mind didn’t know how to tell my legs to move me out of Luke’s path. We stood in place, staring at each other. Was this our thing? Was this even a thing?
I was usually reserved when it came to relationships, protecting my feelings from the normal and expected rejection. Luke was more reserved than I was, so it made me the aggressor when I was anything but.
“Thank you for protecting us, Luke, and for risking your life to save ours,” I stated, needing something to unfreeze my mind.
His hand rose, waiting at my side, but he didn’t touch me. “You’re welcome. It’s my pleasure. I have a problem with a group of armed men hunting down women.” His statement caused a wide smile to cross my lips.
We lingered there, sharing the warmth and buzzing energy. My body swayed, gravitating toward him on its own accord. It was like the space around us was alive with this verve that forced us closer, and it wasn’t something to be ignored.
I reached out to where he’d been shot earlier, knowing there was a huge bruise there. My fingers feathered over the area as our gazes remained locked.
“Good night, Luke,” I whispered, wanting more, but fighting my urge. I didn’t want to come on too strong and have him think I was throwing myself at him. However, I wanted Luke to want me, but I didn’t know how to get to the next level.
“Good night, Beverly,” he whispered before heading to the couch. My legs finally moved me, but I stood at the door to the bedroom, fighting not to look back. Finally, I turned the knob and pushed the door open, meeting Laura’s light snores on the way in.
