An idea hit me. Did they do this to anyone out of the circle that could identify Santino? They would kill us with no qualms because we’d entered the penthouse and come face to face with a man who lived with no face.

Once outside, Eduardo held Beverly from behind like they were boyfriend and girlfriend, his arms draped around her waist. Two stood behind me as Laura continued arguing with the one aiming a gun at her. Oliver and another remained inside with Santino.

As soon as they shoved the balcony door shut, the wind suctioned it closed, giving us the sound-proofing we needed. The pool in the distance to our left provided light, unnaturally blue and waving across the area. I didn’t think. I acted. My elbow went flying into the underside of the chin of the man who stood at my right as the heel of my opposite foot stomped into the groin of the man on my left.

Holding his mouth, the man allowed me to seize his gun. Urgent yells rang out for me to stop and drop it, but their orders would be ignored unless they shot me. I’d not let the men step out of the darkness before I attacked. Therefore, their friends would risk shooting them trying to take me out. My knee was up in a flash, crushing the face of the one I’d taken the gun from.

Within seconds, a bullet was in the top of the head of the one whose balls I’d rearranged, and two more bullets cracked open the chest of the one whose gun I’d taken. On a spin, the barrel was aimed at Eduardo, who kept Beverly in a tight grip with a smirk on his face.

“Still trying for the fucking hero slot, I see. Nice moves, Daniel Wu, but you’re not faster than a fucking bullet. You and these bitches are going to die.” He wasn’t too shaken up by his friend’s deaths and hadn’t even taken a second glance as I held one in front of me as a shield and the other lay bloody at my feet. The shadows cast off the building provided me an extra layer of protection.

Eduardo’s steady aim nearly kissed Beverly’s head. I pointed my weapon at his head in return, and the guy who had a tight hold on Laura targeted me. The dancing water of the pool made the dim view wave, so aiming and hitting your target with precision wasn’t going to be easy.

If it were only my life on the line, Eduardo and his friend would already be dead, but I couldn’t take the chance at them hurting Beverly and Laura. The big, burly one who held Laura revealed his fear. It floated off him like steam. The intense triangle standoff would end in blood and death, hopefully theirs.

“You’re outnumbered,” Eduardo pointed out as he removed his gun from Beverly’s head to take aim at me. I enjoyed witnessing the moment when a man allowed his ego to override his sense. When a flash of metal flickered, and the shiny blade emerged, I was grateful for Eduardo’s fatal mistake.
