“You’ve been weird all night. Are you sure there’s nothing wrong?”

She tries to get around my door. I pull her back.

“Butch, seriously,” she says, yanking her arm away. “I’m tired. Get out of my way.”

“Okay,” I say, backing up to let her get around me. “I’ll walk you to your room.”

She glares at me. “I don’t need you to walk me to my room.”

“I want to make sure you get up there safely,” I say, smiling. “I’m not trying to join you.”

“Oh, I’m perfectly aware of that,” she says, stomping up the stairs to the inn. She stops when she makes it to the top and spins around. “Stop following me.”

I jerk my head back. “What’s wrong with you tonight?”

She throws the door open and lets it close in my face. When I open the door, she’s already halfway up the stairs to the second floor. I follow her. She stabs the key into the lock of her door, pushes it open, and then tries to slam it.

“What is happening right now?” I say, stopping the door with my hand. “Let me come in and we can talk about it.”

“Hell no. And if you don’t let me close this door right now, I’m going to scream and wake up everyone in this quiet little town.”

“Alright.” I hold my arms in the air. “If you’re not into me, it’s cool.”

She slams the door and then flings it back open immediately. She rushes back into the hallway and points at me. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

I look up and down the hallway. “You’re waking up the town.”

“Me? Not into you?” She spins around and points at her door. “Get into my room! Right now!”

“I’m very confused at the moment,” I say, narrowing my eyes, “but can I just tell you how much I like this dominatrix look on you?”

“Shut up!” She points at her room again. When I don’t move, she lets out a frustrated grunt and marches into her room. “God, you piss me off!”

I follow her in and shut the door behind me.

“Why are you like this?” She turns around and charges back toward me.

When she gets to me, I pick her up under the arms and press her body against the wall.

“Like what?” I say, pushing my leg between her thighs.

“You’re a tease.” She hisses at me. “I waited for you to show up here after we got off the lake this afternoon.”

“What? I had to drive the boat across the lake to fill it up. I didn’t want to return it to Hank empty. I barely got back here in time to get cleaned up to head over to Nash’s.”

A pouty—and very sexy—look floods her face. “You could have told me that. I thought you were blowing me off.”

“Why didn’t you ask me?” I say, pressing my body more firmly against hers as I pull her legs around my waist.

She makes a halfhearted attempt to push me away. “Don’t tease me. You had me like this in my room last night and you kissed me on the top of my head and left.”

“I wasn’t in your room last night,” I say, tracing her face with my finger. “I’m in now and I’m staying in unless you want me to leave. Do you want me to leave?”

“I’m not sure yet,” she says, biting my finger as it makes it to her lips. “Are you really into this or not? You’re giving me all kinds of mixed signals.”

“Are you completely out of your last relationship?” I say, locking my eyes with hers. “I mean completely, Kit. I like you, but I don’t want to be your rebound guy.”

“Out. Completely out,” she says, her eyes getting wider. “I promise.”
