KIT
“Not a chance.”
After I left Mason and Millie, I came up to my room, put on Butch’s t-shirt, and collapsed into the bed for a nap. I woke up to a knock on the door. I looked through the peephole and saw Butch leaning against the wall, holding up a pair of boots.
“Not a chance for what?” he says, raising his eyebrows as a smile spreads all over his face.
“I’m not hiking again. You might as well give those boots back to Claire right now.”
He pushes the boots into my chest and kisses the top of my head. “Why would I give these to Claire when I just bought them for you?”
I narrow my eyes as I look up at him. “Why did you buy me boots?”
“Because you’ll need them when you move back here.” He pulls me into the room and closes the door. “Didn’t you say hiking was going to be one of our courting things?”
“Yes, but I thought the courting was canceled. Didn’t you say you needed alone time?”
“It’s not canceled,” he says, hugging me. “And I don’t need alone time. I’m sorry. I was blaming you for something that wasn’t your fault. Can we forget about the last couple of hours and do a reset?”
I nod against his chest. “Yes, please.”
“Is Mateo gone?”
“Yeah, he’s on his way back to Spain.”
“And you’re headed there tomorrow.” He hugs me tighter. “Are you going to see him?”
“When he left, he said he never wanted to see me again so very doubtful.”
“Do you want to see him?” He tilts my chin up. “I mean for closure or anything.”
“You know, honestly, I don’t care either way.”
He looks down at me with the gentle eyes. “I’m a little worried about you seeing him again. Nash said he was really pissed. Do you want me to come with you to Spain?”
“No,” I say, laying my head back on his chest. “I think you were right about that. I need to close that chapter by myself.”
“Are you sure? I could help you pack. I’m good at taping up boxes.”
“I’m sure you are. You’re good at everything.” I look up at him. “How about you help me unpack when my stuff gets here?”
“Deal.” He tugs at my shirt. “Is this my t-shirt?”
“Yeah. I put it on so I could fall asleep smelling you. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to smell you in person anymore.”
“You can smell me all you like,” he says, swooping me up into his arms, “but I’m sure we can find better things to do to each other.”
He lays me down on the bed and crawls in beside me. “How long will you be gone?”
“About two weeks.”
He starts stroking my hair. “Are you still moving in with Elle?”
“Yeah, at first, but her place is really small. I don’t know what I’m going to do with all of my stuff.”
“We’ll figure it out.”
“I like the ‘we’ thing,” I say, crawling on top of him.
