BUTCH

“Incoming.”

Raine ran into the restaurant and ambushed me from behind. I tried to push her away, but she kept diving into my head.

“Incoming,” she whispers urgently into my ear again.

“Quit saying that.” I try to get her to stand still, but she keeps whipping her head back and forth from me to the door. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Incoming,” she says, her eyes getting increasingly wider.

“Have you lost all of the other words in your vocabulary?” I grab her shoulders and force her into the chair next to me. “Or have you been at the martinis again?”

“Incoming?” Kit laughs from behind me. “Should we be taking cover or something?”

Raine locks her eyes into mine and nods toward the restaurant door. Before I can look over there, I hear Elle gasp. When I turn to her, she’s staring at the door—her mouth gaping.

Kit spins her head around to the door as Raine leans into my head again and whispers. “Boyfriend.”

“What are you doing here?” Kit’s body tenses under my arm.

I look over my shoulder to see a slender guy pulling a suitcase behind him. He’s walking slowly toward us. His eyes are fixed on me.

“Who is that?” he says in a deep accent. I’m assuming it’s Spanish. “And why does he have his arm around you?”

“Don’t worry about who I am.” I stand up slowly and step in front of Kit. I swat Raine’s hand away as she tries to pull me back down. “Who are you?”

“I’m her boyfriend—”

“Ex-boyfriend!” Kit jumps up and walks toward him. “Mateo, we broke up. What are you doing here?”

“We didn’t break up.” He reaches his hand out to her. She doesn’t take it.

“Yes, we did,” she says, looking back at me. “I’m not dating him anymore.”

Mateo says something to Kit in Spanish. She answers back in Spanish.

“He asked if you two had sex,” Raine says, tugging on my arm and trying to pull me back into my seat. “She said it was none of his business.”

Mateo looks over at me and laughs. “Be careful what you say, Kit. He apparently has an interpreter.”

“He has two interpreters,” Millie says as she walks around the table and stands in front of me. “We’re both fluent in Spanish and extremely fond of him, so be very careful what you say in any language.”

Mateo looks at me and then back to Kit. He says something else in Spanish.

“That’s not true at all!” Kit yells as she looks back and forth between Millie and Raine.

I tap Raine’s head. “What’d he say?”

“Don’t Raine,” Kit says. “It’s not true and it’s not worth repeating.”

“Uh, yeah, I think I have to pass on that one.” Raine looks up at me. “It was beyond my interpretation skill level.”

“Beyond your skill level? Really? Nice try.” I turn to Millie. “Mills, you’re up. You never take a pass. Translate it.”

“Uh,” she says, looking back at Mason and motioning him to join us. “He basically called you a fuck boy. Like someone Kit’s using to get over him.”

“That’s not true,” Kit says, rushing over to me and putting her hands on my chest. “You know that’s not true.”
