“Kit? Swimming? Sun?”
“Uh, yeah. It’s sounding a little better,” I say, pulling at my tank top a few times to try to get some air going. “Will there be liquor and snacks?”
“I never go anywhere without them.” He nods at me. “Are you hot now?”
“A little. I think I’ve had too much wine. Do you want to get out of here after we finish these?”
“Yeah, let me settle up with Gabi and I’ll meet you at the door.”
I reach into my back pocket. “Here, let me give you my credit card—”
“Kit, you’ve already pissed me off enough today. Don’t you dare take that card out.”
I freeze with my hand still in my back pocket. He walks around the table, pulls my arm up, and places it back on the table. “Finish your wine and then meet me up front. I’ll take you back to your room.”
“Okay!” I’m too loud again and way too enthusiastic. “I mean okay. Do you mind if I use your phone for a second?”
“Not at all,” he says, handing it to me. “Password spells out Georgia.”
When he turns his back to me, I quickly blot myself with the napkins on the table and then text Elle.
It’s Kit. This is Butch’s phone.
He wants to take me back to my room!
I’m sweating so much right now.
* * *
WHAT?!! OMGGGGG. Are you ready for all that?
I mean, mentally.
Your sweaty body is obviously ready.
* * *
He’s so HOTTTTT. And he’s really sweet, too.
We’ve been talking for a bit. I think I’m going to do it.
* * *
Text me tomorrow morning. FIRST THING.
I need to know everything.
* * *
FIRST THING!!!
I delete the texts, drain the rest of my glass, and blot myself a few more times before I head to the front. When I get there, Butch is leaning against the wall waiting for me.
“You ready?” he says, opening the door.
“Yep.”
As I look up at him, I trip on the door sill. He grabs my arm and steadies me.
