“I want to be with you so badly right now.” I shake my head to try to clear the frustration I’m feeling. “After we get the people who killed JJ, I think I can go back to San Diego. We can get back to our normal life. Okay?”

“Okay.” She lets out a long yawn. “Mase, I’m exhausted. I’m going to try to get some sleep.”

“Okay, baby,” I say gently. “Do you want me to stay on the phone while you fall asleep?”

“Yes. Do you have time?”

“All the time in the world. Close your eyes, Mills. I won’t hang up until you’re asleep.”

When I hear her breathing become slow and steady, I reluctantly disconnect the phone. All I can think about is how mad I am that I’m not lying behind her, spooning her as she sleeps.
