His eyebrows draw together as he takes a step back toward me. “Or maybe you won the bet, so you’re done with me now.”

“Alex, that’s not it. It’s just—I’m a private person. And this whole resort,” I say, waving my hand around the lobby, “is like college spring break or something. Everyone’s in each other’s business.”

His face melts a little bit. “Then let’s get breakfast somewhere else. I’ll drive us over to Cruz Bay. We can find something there and talk about what’s going on with you right now.”

“Okay,” I say slowly, “but I’m really hungry. And I get combative when I’m hungry.”

“More combative than this?” He laughs as he grabs my hand and pulls me over to the drink table. He hands me a banana. “Will this hold you until I can properly feed you?”

I nod. As he starts pulling me toward the valet, he looks over his shoulder. “Okay, then let’s go before someone sees us together. I wouldn’t want to be on the front page of the St. John newspaper or something.”
