“Why had?” He looks at me with concern. “Did he do something to you?”

“No,” I sigh. “I did something to him. I didn’t trust him to be the person he showed me he was. I’m guessing he doesn’t want much to do with me anymore.”

“And I’m guessing you’re completely wrong about that.”

“Maybe,” I say, standing up. “I have to leave. My best friend’s getting married in Chicago this weekend. We’re flying out there today. She’ll kill me if I miss the plane.”

“Okay, Sophia,” he says, smiling. “I’m going to miss you.”

“What? We’re apart for a couple of days and you’re already forgetting about me,” I say, laughing.

“Oh I’m guessing once someone meets Sophia Banks, they don’t forget about her too soon.” He reaches for my hand and squeezes it. “And that includes Seb. Call him. I’ve known him a long time. I’ve never seen him as happy as when you’re around.”

I lean over and hug him. “Bye, Ray. On the record, I think you’re the sweetest reporter I’ve ever met.”

“Definitely don’t tell anyone else that,” he chuckles as I walk away. “Really bad for my reputation.”
