Chapter Thirty
seb
When I get off the field after warmups, I see Joe power-walking toward me. He looks anxious. I’ve never seen him look anxious about anything.
“Seb.” He looks over his shoulder to make sure no one’s listening to us.
“What?” I say as he pulls me over to a corner. “What’s wrong?”
“I just walked by Gentry’s office.”
“Yeah, so.”
He hesitates. “I saw Sophie go into his office a few minutes ago.”
“What?” My body tenses up. “Alone?”
“Liza Murray walked out a few minutes after Sophie walked in,” he says, lowering his voice. “I’m not sure who else is in there. Do you want me to go check?”
“No,” I say, throwing my water bottle against the wall. “I’ve got this.”
“Seb.” He grabs at my shoulder, but I’m already running down the hallway.
As I bust into Gentry’s office, Sophie’s backing away from him. He’s doubled over on the floor—grabbing his balls.
“Over the line, Gentry,” she says, pointing at him. “Way over the line!”
She’s backing up and doesn’t see us. She crashes into me as I walk toward her.
“What’s over the line?” I growl as I circle my arms tightly around her.
She tries to break free of my grip as she looks up at me. Her eyes are wild.
“Get your hands off me!” She pushes me hard on the chest. When I see the tears in her eyes, I drop my arms and back up a step.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” I try to touch her shoulder, but she pulls it away.
“Baby?” Gentry says, looking up. “Well, that’s something Dad needs to hear about.”
I turn my attention back to Gentry. “Did you touch her?”
Joe wraps his arms around my chest as I start walking toward Gentry. “Seb, we can’t do this right now. You have a game to play. You need to be back on the field in ten minutes.”
He’s pinning my arms to my side, but he knows he can’t hold me. He’s trying to ease me back. “Seb, come on now. We can finish this later.”
“If you touched her. I’m going to fucking kill you.”
Gentry’s scoots into the corner. “Seb, I would never touch Sophia.”
I point at him as I charge toward him again. “Don’t you fucking say her name.”
Joe jumps in front of me and pushes me back again. “Leave this office. Now. We can come back after the game. I promise.”
I glare at Gentry one more time before I turn around. Sophie’s standing with her back against the wall. Her eyes are still wild. She sees me look at her, spins, and starts running out of the room.
“Sophie!” I bust out of Joe’s hold and jog after her. The hallway’s filling up with people—owners, media, staff. They’re all looking at me.
Sophie turns around slowly as I close in on her.
