He shakes his head like he can’t understand me. “Wilbur could have got you something in one of his offices in town.”

“But then I’d have got the job because of who my grandfather is and not because I was the right person for the job. I want to make my own way in life and not rely on someone else.”

Archer studies me in silence. “You really are unlike any other girl I’ve met. Most of the females in the bay here have never done a day’s work in their life. What time do you start?”

“Eight in the morning.”

“I’ll run you,” he announces.

“I can walk. I have two legs, you know?”

“Oh, I know. They look beautiful wrapped around my waist,” he says with a heated look. “You have a stalker, remember? You can’t walk there. It’s not safe.”

“Then I’ll get Chester or Wilbur to run me.”

He sighs in exasperation. “Chester will probably still be high off the coke he was snorting earlier and Wilbur’s an old man, let him have a lie-in. We both know you’ll be waking up in my bed in the morning.”

My hands at the back of his neck form fists. “So presumptuous, Archer.”

“It’s not presumptuous, Scarlet. Its fact.”
