“I’ll take it under advisement.” He picks up his phone and calls my brother to meet him.

“Don’t tell anyone, not even Luca.” My brother doesn’t have compassion like my father. He would take pleasure in killing Romeo, then ask for forgiveness after.

“I will be telling you what to do,” he says sternly, his anger getting the better part of him. He’s trying his best not to show it now, but he can’t hide it. “An auction.” He shakes his head in disbelief while muttering to himself. “If I even agree to this auction idea, it will be under my terms. You will do as I say. I will not tolerate you disobeying me. Especially since this goes against everything I believe in. Our enemies will want to use this opportunity to hurt us. If something were to happen to you and you got hurt…” His words die off with him not even being able to think that way. “I cannot and will not live through that.”

“I love you. Thank you.” I stand, kissing him on his warm cheek.

What he says is true. All of our enemies will come try to win Nicoli’s youngest daughter. The sweet, innocent one. If only they knew I’ve never been that sweet or innocent.

My heart is pounding a hundred miles an hour. Excitement wraps around my nerves. This could be the best or the worst idea I’ve ever had.

My first seeds of doubt creep in. What if Romeo doesn’t forgive me? What if he never loved me? What if I was a way to pass the time? What if someone else wins?

My father will try with all his power to not allow that. But he could use this as a teaching lesson or set me up. He could arrange another marriage behind closed doors.

I’m going all in. Winner takes all. If I lose….

My body shudders at the thought. I won’t go there. I’ve heard rumors of men trading girls; never thought I would be part of it one day. Willingly.

My breakfast rises, and I can’t do anything to stop it. I run to the bathroom and empty my stomach. So much for trying to eat.
