With an evil grin, Frank brings a needle out from his back pocket, and Aria frantically fights to get away. Her legs slip against his, while she attempts to pull her arm away. I watch as some of the liquid shoots out of the needle before he tries to jab it into her arm. I run toward them, adrenaline pumping through my veins at the sound of her frightened plea.

“There a problem here?” I ask, allowing my presence to be known. I frown at Frank but keep my eye on the needle, ready to rip it from his hand the first chance I have.

“This has nothing to do with you. Turn around and go the other way,” he hollers at me.

“You sure you want to make Rossi’s daughter an addict?” I’ve unclasped my gun from the holster, prepared to pull it out. I’m in street clothes, but there is no mistake—I’m a cop. We’ve had enough interactions with Frank that he knows who I am.

“At least I know she has the money to pay for it.”

“I said I would give you the money she owes!” Aria stresses. Tears run down her face, but she makes no crying sounds.

“We both know it’s bad business what you’re doing, Frank. Let her pay the debt,” I try to negotiate, wondering who she’s trying to save.

I have enough on this guy to arrest him right now. But If I do, I won’t be able to talk to Aria. I’m hoping by our interaction at the bar she thinks I’m a dirty cop. I need her to trust me.

The drug dealer rolls his eyes, playing the power game, but he lets her go. “This is a favor to you.” He points toward me.Stupid man.I’ll be back to arrest him.

“Give Lori a kiss from me,” he says to Aria with a hint of annoyance in his tone before brushing shoulders with her as he leaves the area.

“You okay?”

At the sound of my voice, she turns her head toward me. Her face is blotchy, and her eyes are red. She’s beautiful. Part of her hair stays clinging to her damp face, even when she tries to push it back.

I step closer, placing my hands on her shoulders, checking her over. There are no bruises or nicks. I move her sleeve up, double-checking. Suddenly, a scream rips through her throat as I check her over. She kicks and fights me off when I’m making sure she’s fine. I’ll be pulling Frank to the station if he stuck her with the needle.

I cover her mouth, her shrieks landing hard into my hand. Her breath warms my palm before her teeth scrape at my skin.

“Calm down. I’m one of the good guys.” That normally has people backing off.

Instead, she screams louder. My hand holds tighter not wanting attention to be brought to us.

She doesn’t stop hollering, and if anyone were to walk by, they’d hear her.Where the hell is her bodyguard? He really is shitty at his job and needs to be fired. I look around us as I attempt to talk some logic into her.

“Aria, I’m not here to hurt you. I need to make sure you are fine and not hurt.” My eyes try to hold hers, keeping her attention on me, but they’re shifting over the entire alley.

I’m getting flustered with her ear-piercing screams. I’d rather live my life and not have it cut short because someone thinks I’m hurting her. I hear steps from afar. My pulse speeds up, and I move my hand from her mouth to cupping her face. My lips press down on hers, swallowing shrieks before they stop. Holding her lips to mine, I devour them before slipping my tongue into her open mouth. I expected her to bite down on me; instead, she stops struggling and kisses me back.

Her hands rest on my chest, holding me as tight as I’m holding her. She’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever kissed. I hear a click of a gun before the barrel is pressed into my head. The cold metal slides behind the top of my ear, and I can feel their presence at my back.

CHAPTER 7

Theo’s hands freeze, his kisses stop, but he doesn’t pull away at the sound of the gun. My heart hammers in my chest as my relief turns into the humiliation of kissing him once again.

Pushing away, my hand automatically wipes his kiss from my lips. My sister Luna stands staring at Theo’s head, ready to pull the trigger. He doesn’t cower, standing tall, quirking a questioning eyebrow at me.

“Do wewantto be kissing this guy?” Her voice is hard and cold. I don’t know where she came from. She’s dressed in tight black jeans and a black crop top. She reminds me of a modern-day Catwoman. She’ll be able to slip into the shadows undetected, with dusk becoming darker.

That’s a good question and leaves me stumped. He keeps catching me off guard. I glance from him to my sister. His tongue dips out, licking my kiss from his lips. Heat radiates on my skin, my cheeks burning crimson. My response is silly, when I don’t even like him. I’m officially going crazy.

“I don’t know?” It comes off more like a question than an answer.

My eyes wander back to Theo, and he’s glaring down at me. He kissed me, and now he’s the one scowling like I did something wrong. He holds his hand up, not in surrender but a truce.

“Thought I’d throw Aria a bone, since I called her a whore at our last meeting.” He doesn’t shy away; in fact, he’s enjoying mocking me. The gun pointed at his head doesn’t faze him. He’s calm and as arrogant as ever. My heart beats rapidly in my chest as he tells my secret.

Luna gives me a smile that Theo can’t see and offers me an approving nod. She wouldn’t be doing that if she found out he was a cop.

“I can have you killed in less than a second. I suggest choosing your words better,” I say, staring him down. I cross my arms over my chest, hating the way my nipples point. He’s watching me, and his smile stretches farther across his face.Good guy, my ass. Taking him in, I see he’s dressed in street clothes again; there’s no sign he’s a cop. It’s the one reason Luna hasn’t shot him on the spot.
