“Not anyone, just you,” I sass, gaining another smile. I take a sniff, and it smells light and fruity. “What should we drink to?” I raise my glass, waiting for his answer.
“To bending rules and being happier for it.”
The kitchen is small and cozy, and as he moves easily around it, the aroma coming from the sauce he’s making smells delicious. Theo rolls up his sleeves to his forearms, looking at peace in here.
The entire meal, I’m mesmerized by him. He tells me stories of him growing up, but I notice he never mentions his dad. It’s like it hurts too much to talk about. Not wanting to ruin the mood, I don’t ask, and our conversation flows smoothly. He never asks about my family, and I don’t mention them either.
After dinner, we end up watching TV in his bed. His bedroom is the only place he has a TV, but it doesn’t bother me.
“Sorry, I don’t get much company here. I work most of the time,” he apologizes for having to watch TV in his room. I’m happy it’s in here. It’s nice to have him hold me.
“Are all of your friends on the force?” I ask, nestling into his chest.
“All the ones here, but I wouldn’t call them friends. They’re more acquaintances or work people. Grant would be the closest thing to a friend, and it’s not like we’re sharing beers and talking on the phone regularly.”
“Well, I guess it’s a good thing you have me.” I look up from his chest.
“Why’s that?”
“Now, you have a friend.”
His chest vibrates with his silent laugh, and he gives me his handsome smirk. We’re watching old reruns ofFriends. He’s lying on his back. I’m lying on his chest. His hand stays on my hip, which is looped around me. I keep expecting him to make a move, but he never does. On our third episode, I can hear his light snores. Lifting myself off him, I see he’s fallen asleep. This was the perfect date. Standing, I walk to his side of the bed and give him a chaste peck on the lips. When he doesn’t stir, I eye his handcuffs.
I could easily cuff him to his bedpost and go find Frank. Picking up the cold metal, I place one end around the bedpost, my heart beating erratically against my ribcage. Checking my watch, it’s still early. Almost nine o’clock. I don’t need to handcuff him; he’s sleeping and will never know where I’m going. Once I decide I don’t need them, he stirs, and I place the other side of the cuffs on his mattress, not making any noise.
“Did I fall asleep?” he asks, his eyes having a hard time opening.
“I was just going to let myself out.” I give him a smile.
He rubs at his eyes, still in a daze. “I’ll follow you home to make sure you’re safe.”
My heart swoons at his kindness. “You can’t do that.” I can already imagine my father asking why a cop is making sure I get home safely.
He sits up. “I can, and I will.”
The night was so perfect. Now, his stubborn ass is going to ruin it all. In a split second, I grab his handcuffs and latch them onto his wrist. He moves his hand in confusion before the situation wakes him up.
“What the hell?”
“I’m sorry.” I kiss him because I feel bad. “I need to find Frank.”
Theo pulls at the cuffs as I hurry out of his house, hoping I can save my sister from the mess she’s placed herself in.
CHAPTER 22
Iholler afterAria while simultaneously tugging at my hands. The metal cuffs dig into my skin, refusing to release me. My bedpost pulls with each tug, pinching harder.Motherfucker. I should have known better than to trust a Rossi. Even as I’m telling myself this, part of me is impressed. That girl is a firecracker. She’s equal parts sexy and sassy. It’s a lethal combination.
There’s no way I’m able to get the keys, and I know I’ll have to break my bed. Yanking on the metal, the tight cuffs pull to the point of breaking skin. My phone goes off beside me, and I’ve never been happier to see Grant’s name.
“I need your help, Grant,” I answer, getting right to the point.
He chuckles. “Oh yeah? With what?”
I stand, trying to stretch myself, but it doesn’t help. “Come over and I’ll tell you,” I huff out.
“Oh no, you’re going to tell me first.”
I groan. I’ll never live this down, but I have no other choices. “I’m handcuffed to my bed and can’t get out.”
