This was too much for him. I wasn’t sure how to console him in this situation, so I just didn't know what I knew. I pulled him in for a hug, and didn’t let go. He cried into me for a while, and all I could do was be there for him and listen.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do. As you know, my mom and I have never been close due to my dad. He broke her, and I tried to help, but couldn’t. I love her. I don’t want to lose her.” He said.
It’s unfortunate he’d never been close to her, but he had every right not to be. The woman stayed with her abuser for years, and after getting divorced, she went right back to him. She put her son’s life in danger by staying with Sebastian’s dad willingly.
I’m not saying I hate his mom, but I don’t agree with her actions at all. How can you stay with a man like that? How do you feel loved? How are you happy at that point in a relationship?
“How’s she doing? What has she told you?”
“She said the doctors told her she doesn’t have much time, and the cancer’s too far along to prevent. I want to be there for her, but I don’t want to be around my dad. I fear what I might do. He abused my mom for years, and I will not let that happen now I’m grown.”
Sebastian was put in an awful position. The decision he must make was tremendously difficult. Does he help his mom through this and put up with being around his dad? Does he have her move in with him, so he can help her but not have his dad around? This was a difficult decision to make for anyone.
“Sebastian, this is a tough decision. You know I’m here for you if you want to discuss things with me. This decision is going to affect you, either way, you go with it. Just make sure you are making the best decision for yourself too. I don’t want to see you fall into a depression because you are around your dad. I know what it does to you even after all these years.”
I wasn’t sure what else to say to him. He sits there with his eyes closed.
“Is your mom still getting abused?” I asked.
“She says he isn’t anymore, but I know she’s lying. I’d seen new bruises on her when she visited me. I’m not sure why she feels like she needs to keep it a secret from me. I was around for all those years. I already know what he’s capable of.”
“Sebastian, maybe you should help her through this. She might need you now more than ever. Do you think your dad would help her?”
“He’s a dick. He isn’t going to help her. He will beat her because she will be too sick to clean the house or do laundry. It’s always over stupid shit. He doesn’t do anything. He used to beat her because she didn’t have dinner ready when he got home from work. He used to tell her all the time that’s all women were good for.”
My mouth fell wide-open. What kind of man was he? How did Sebastian become such a good man with two parents like that? His dad sounded like a true asshole.
“Well Sebastian, I would go ahead and do it. If it gets to be too much, you can stop. You should at least try.” I told him.
Sebastian shook his head in agreement, and made his decision. He was going to help his mom through this even if it meant having to be around that son of a bitch. Sebastian wasn’t the type of person to let his mom suffer.
Chapter 19
Sebastian
The relationship betweenmy mom and I was complicated and always had been. I never could understand why she chose to stay with my father even when she had every opportunity to leave. My father was a sick man who still beat on her when she had cancer when I was a child. In my head, it was evident that she was still getting hit even if she denied it.
