“Just press play,” he instructs.

I don’t trust the look he’s giving me, but I accept both things from him and make my way over to the free space. Vane snorts as I perch on the edge of the seat, unsure of my welcome, and drags me against his side, earning him a grumpy look from Frost.

My legs curl up automatically, and the ghoul makes up for the lack of contact by dragging my feet into his lap and starting the task of unlacing my boots.

“Missed you, Princess,” Vane mutters, stealing my attention back.

The murmur is quiet, near whisper-soft, but it draws a snort from Mia.

He tosses a glare back at her. “Shut it, squirt.”

“Bossy. Have you told her your plan to take over her life yet? When are you going to drop her off in a random capital with a fake ID in the name of safety?”

Vane growls something under his breath which sounds disconcertingly like ‘as soon as possible’, but Mia isn’t done.

“Just so you know, Evie, Gideon might be the most openly control-freak of the pack, but Vane is the same. He’s just sneakier at it.”

I lift my head and look back over my shoulder at her. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Mia, stop winding her up,” Vane grunts, tugging me back until I’m lying on his lap. “And you, try to get some rest.”

He may be just as bossy as Mia accuses him of being, but oddly I don’t mind. It’s nice to have someone who’s genuinely concerned for my well being. In a way, his gruffness is almost charming.

Frost finally removes both of my boots and tugs away my socks as I slip the earbuds into my ears. Who knows, perhaps this audiobook—whatever it is—will help me relax enough to actually sleep.

Hitting the play button, I shimmy into a more comfortable position against Vane’s chest and my eyes just happen to meet Finn’s across the walkway.

The omega is grinning like the cat who got the cream.
