“Call your sister. You mentioned your contacts with an MC working in law enforcement and she’s staying with them at the moment, right? I think it’s best if we keep this quiet while they can come into town and catch him in the act. If we call in the sheriff, he might be able to get rid of things like his phone or however he’s accessing the video stream. Those bikers work differently than the authorities around here and can do stuff without waiting for warrants.”
Medley grabs her phone and her eyes slide to Ramona. I know what she’s thinking but I also know keeping this from her will cause more damage in the long run, even if it’s done to protect her.
It’s for this reason I voice my opinion. “Bring her in on the plan to nail him once and for all. She’s stronger than you think.”
“You keep saying that,” she grumbles.
The corner of my mouth twitches and I reach out to cup the back of her neck, bringing her close to brush my lips against hers. It’s a quick but thorough kiss, letting her feel what emotions she brings out inside me.
She pulls back and I take pleasure in the dazed look her face is graced with. “Make the call and I’ll talk with Ramona, okay?”
“Okay.” She turns and thumbs her phone while I walk into Ramona’s direction.
“What’s going on? I know there’s something. I can tell by the look on my VP’s face that she’s keeping things from me.” She stomps her cowboy boot into the dirt and adds, “I’m so sick of this shit. I feel as if Henrick stole more than my dignity and all of them view me as a broken piece that needs to be fixed.”
“They care for you and want you to overcome shit on your own while they support you,” I argue.
“Well, it feels as if they all have gloves on and walk on eggshells. Yes, I have nightmares but that’s because I can’t control what happens when my body shuts down. It’s the part where I can’t watch my own back. But I refuse to let him overtake my life. Today I realized how much I enjoy herding those Longhorns back into a pasture and letting Dover take sharp turns and run at full speed. Those things make me feel alive and bring out an adrenaline rush I sucked right up. That’s how I know from this moment forward I will have a reason to move past all of this. And it might not be today or next month when the nightmares end. Hell, maybe they never will but there’s more to life than being scared of the past: I have a future to be excited about.”
“How about a chance to nail the fucker red-handed with the help of the law so he won’t be getting away like he did when you guys caught him drugging your water? For something that’s the same and yet different. Something he won’t talk himself out of?” I challenge and I can see the anger and determination rising in her eyes.
“Hell, yes. Tell me.”
I cross my arms in front of my chest and stare her down. “If you do, you have to stay focused on the end game and not dwell on the past, even if that past is as fresh as a minute ago.”
She mimics my pose. “Lay it on me.”
“I’m fairly sure I noticed a micro camera in your room. The reflective lights of the camera lens instantly caught my attention.”
Her eyes go wide. “That’s why you wanted to leave the room and head for the stables.”
“There’s a tiny chance I’m overreacting and there isn’t a camera but with your history, the fucker renovating the room which allows him to put a camera in there behind the wall, fully installed on the electrical system, streaming and shit, is easy as fuck. I’m hoping I’m wrong. But those law enforcement bikers are going to come and the goal is to catch him, to secure any mobile phone or laptop and tear up the room to make sure.”
“I hope you’re not wrong.” Ramona places her hands on her hips and her whole face shows she’s pissed as hell. “Then he won’t be able to deny how sick in the head he is. Dammit, it makes me wonder if there are other women he’s done this to. Maybe other houses or whatever projects he’s worked on that allowed him to put cameras inside walls and get off at watching women in their private moments.”
Fuck. I didn’t even think that far ahead.
Medley touches my arm and my gaze lands on her lips. “All set. They’re on their way.”
I nod and glance at Ramona to see her reaction. “Good. Now we need to make a plan how we’re going to handle tonight because I won’t be sleeping in that room ever again.”
I couldn’t agree more.
CHAPTER SEVEN
– MEDLEY –
“She seems to be in a good mood,” Ivar says.
I take in the thoughtful look on his face. His hair is pulled back into a bun at the back of his neck. I saw him do it when I walked into the bathroom this morning after he took a shower. We shared another night filled with blissful sex and woke up in one another’s arms.
Any time now I expect the bubble to burst and he will turn into a grumpy overbearing asshole who demands that I give everything up I hold dear to follow him back to New York. Instead, he keeps surprising me by supporting my choices, having my back and that of my sisters while giving his opinion.
I take a quick glance at Ramona, who woke up almost an hour ago on the couch in the main room of the clubhouse and is letting her thumbs slide over the screen of her phone. I know exactly why her mood has shifted.
I make sure Ivar’s gaze is on me when I tell him, “Sonnet, Zoanne, and some of the others went along with her for a long ride last night. Ramona was restless and wanted to feel the road and roaring bike underneath her.”
Sometimes I forget he’s not able to catch what I’m rambling about if I don’t face him. He has ways to stay in the discussion at hand, and I admire his way of coping but that doesn’t mean I can’t chip in. It’s why I try to stare into his warm eyes whenever I have something to say.
