Kane and Lance stood with their arms behind their backs, letting Joe and the others who’d just arrived lead them out to the police cars.
To keep their disguises intact, it had been planned all along for Lance and Kane to be hauled in with the others. Once in custody, there would be some confusion. Word would get out that both would be freed by top-notch lawyers and bogus bullshit against the arresting cops. That should enable them to infiltrate another group who shared the same principles of hatred and law breaking.
But for now, all Kane wanted was to get loose from this whole pile of – of heartache and find Jennie.
Earlier, seeing her hurt and lying on the floor had destroyed him, leaving his heart stuck in his throat. Whether he knew her injuries weren’t life-threatening or not, it had been like a knife in the gut. He still hadn’t recuperated and wouldn’t until he held her tight in his arms.
In the back of the police car, sitting next to Lance, he replayed the earlier trauma, knowing he’d held back the murderous rage to rip his brother apart but only because Lance had stepped in and then the police.
Tears reignited when he accepted that they’d killed his brother but only seconds before he’d have done so himself. And that sad fact made him weak and sick inside, questioning his morals. For a man who’d always believed in good versus bad, winning against evil, tonight had made him doubt everything.
Always living as a man of the law helping others, he now knew how close that line could be if it meant protecting someone you loved.
