“What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Those guys aren’t pussycats, Mom. They scared the living bejesus outta me, and I don’t frighten easy. You had to see them to understand. They meant business and most were tickled at the thought of all the people they’d be blowing up with their bombs. They’re filled with hatred and vengeance. It’s terrifying.”
Jennie heard the words Lisa spoke but more importantly, she gaged the effect they had on her girl. “I’m sorry you had to see that, baby. It’s a sad reality in our world today. There are those who only want and respect one race, and they feel superior. Those lessons have been passed down from father to son over many generations.”
“I know all that, Mom. I’ve done a lot of research since the first night I approached Kane. When I thought he was one of them, it made me sick to my stomach. Just thinking I was the daughter of a man so filled with hatred made me want to cut myself off from anything to do with him ever again.” She looked squarely into Jennie’s eyes. “Because of our blood relationship, I felt… I felt utterly… dirty.”
“Oh, baby. Your father is a man of integrity. He loves this country dearly. In fact, he’s laying his life on the line right now. And as an undercover officer, he knows if he’s killed, the government will most likely never reveal his identity or acknowledge him as a patriot.”
“Newsflash, Mom. We need to do something.”
Jennie stiffened, her face becoming that of a scary officer of the law – one that her coworkers knew very well. “You need to give me that address, Lisa. I mean it.”
“Not unless I come along.”
“Impossible. Look, kiddo, don’t mess with me tonight. I’m in no mood. Just give me the directions.” As an afterthought, she added, “I promise I’ll keep in touch.”
“No.”
