Chapter Seventeen

Lisa couldn’t believe she’d be lucky enough to listen in on more of the crap she’d videoed the night before. But many of the same players were here again, congregating with the plot they’d discussed the last time. Only tonight, they were actually making plans.

All she could think of was they must have taken possession of the bombs and the idea sickened her. Seeing her phone wavering, she tried to hold it steady as she panned the room, irritated with not being able to film more than just the few in her sight.

With her attention on her frustration, she didn’t hear when one of the fools had stumbled to his feet, and obviously high on some of the shit that lay everywhere in reach, had decided he needed to go to the can. Only, he’d turned in the wrong direction and was heading straight for her hiding place.

Kane, in deep discussion with Gordie, was no help, and so she had to think quick. Running to the window, she basically dove out of it and hit the ground with her face so close to grinding in the dirt, she felt adrenalin ramp up and her stomach contents a close second.

If it hadn’t been for the strong arms that clutched her body, stopping her from any real damage, she’d have been injured much worse. The skin on her stomach and hips would wear bruises for a while but she’d managed to disappear in time.

A hand over her mouth frightened the hell out of her but effectively kept her screams from being heard and their presence a secret. Being hauled away from the house and into the neighbor’s yard before being turned loose gave her a few moments to come up with a cover story for her dive out of the window.

Assessing her chances of running away before saying anything, she accepted her legs wouldn’t hold her. Shaken from the fall and still upset with what she’d witnessed, her best bet would be to lie and hope her mysterious hero believed her.

Gathering her best acting skills, she waited for her moment. When the guy finally let her speak, the first lies were uttered in a voice full of indignation. “You’ve got to help me. My father’s drunk and meaner than shit. He’ll beat me black and blue if he catches me.”
