Chapter Thirty-six
“I told you, Gordie, I had personal family business to take care of. That’s why I didn’t call you back. Besides, it was the middle of the night.”
“What the fuck, man, it was this morning. Hey… you said you didn’t have any family.”
“I don’t. Just a buddy who’s like my brother.” Wanting to stay as close to the real story as possible, he released more of the truth. “They say he shot a guy and hauled his ass to jail.”
“Jesus, Kane. I’m sorry man. Did you get him out?”
“Nah, the assholes are holding him until they have the criminal investigation. Maybe they’ll let him out on bail. I don’t know. It’s a shit-show I don’t need in my life right now.” Kane flung his hand in the air as if to push aside their discussion. “Tell me, what’s up?”
“I have a meeting arranged with the boss. He wants to be here for the big show and has arranged to arrive day after tomorrow. That means we need to get everyone organized.”
“What do you mean… everyone organized? I thought it would be just a few of the main guys involved. Get in, set up the baskets, and hang back to watch the fireworks.”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought too. But Mr. Bigshot wants an army to show up at the rally first, to distract the folks before they march.”
“Seriously man, won’t that lead to violence?”
“Damn straight. Exactly what I said.”
“But he didn’t listen.”
“Not for a second. He figures the more we harass the people, the more that will join in for the march. We’re to stay at the head of the street and kind of make a barrier so when the explosions occur, the mass will be pretty much blocked from escaping. The man sounds like a real go-getter… know what I mean?”
Jesus… he sounds like a sick murdering bastard to me. Unable to voice his true opinion and blow his cover, Kane nodded. “So… can we meet with him beforehand to go over the route and get our shit figured out?”
“I’m trying to make it happen. Ham is at the clubhouse right now with some of the boys, arranging to have the shipment of explosives delivered to them there. We’ve already stolen the florist uniforms, bought the baskets and plants, so it’s just a matter of putting everything together so they can be delivered as we discussed.”
“Okay. Good. We’ll be taking them to the route the night before the big day, right? It’s kind of what we figured. Is the “Commander in Chief” okay with that idea?”
Gordie chuckled over Kane’s nickname. “So far.”
“He tell you his name. What to call him?”
“Never asked. Called him boss.”
“Easy to remember.” Kane grinned sourly.
“I guess. Look, so you know, he’s a huge ballbreaker and likes to talk smack. To tell the truth, Kane, I didn’t like him very much. He cusses about everything and throws his weight around a lot. Not sure I want to hang with him for more than this one occasion. It’ll be hard, but I’ll do as I’m told, keep my trap shut, and take orders.”
“He tell you that?”
“Pretty much his exact words.”
“Don’t think I’m gonna like him either.”
“Well, since I don’t want to be the only one dealing with the prick, buddy, you’ll be onstage right beside me.”
The words made Kane smile. Gordie had no idea that the reason for his glee was because they had plans to capture the head of the Entitled Group before any explosions could take place.
“So, tell me, when are we getting to meet this pariah.”
“He says he’ll be at the clubhouse tomorrow, late.”
“I’ll be there.”
“I’m counting on it.”
Kane grinned, slapped Gordie on the back in a buddy-like way, and headed for his truck.
Now to get Lance freed from the disruptive inquiries the Internal Affairs division slapped on him because his gun fired the bullet that killed Henry Brunner. He needed his backup free and able to help him gather up these subversive assholes. He’d be depending on Lance to help organize the SWAT team to move in to stop the potential violence with the baskets.
His previous plans of making the arrests at the clubhouse before the big bang would have to be updated. Now they’d need more men.
How cool if for once, the good guys scored a win.
