“I meant to offer marriage to her this evening,” he revealed, his voice breaking. “I don’t need any house party full of eligible young ladies. I don’t want Adalyn choosing my bride for me. I have found the woman I love. The one I wish to spend eternity with. It is Sera.”
Minta burst into tears and Percy hurried to comfort her. Win chomped at the bit, waiting for her to get her feelings under control.
Finally, her tears subsided and she said, “Sera does not think you want her as your duchess. She believes you are complete opposites. She understands the lofty position a duchess holds in Polite Society and doesn’t feel she could fulfill that.”
Minta’s eyes flooded with tears again. “She does love you, Win. Of that, I am certain. But she doesn’t feel she is good enough for you. That is why she had to leave.”
“I don’t give a bloody fig what thetonwants from my duchess,” he roared. “All I know is that I am incomplete without Sera in my life.” He took Minta’s hands in his. “Please. Tell me where she has gone. I must find her and make things right between us.”
She looked to Percy, who nodded.
“She went to Aunt Phyllis and Uncle West.”
Win knew the hour was growing late and it would take a long time to reach London in the darkness. By the time he reached her, Sera would be exhausted and in bed. Instead, he would go first thing in the morning.
Looking at the pair, he said, “I will go to town first thing in the morning. I had planned to do so anyway, taking Sera with me. I was going to purchase a special license at Doctors’ Commons and get her help in hiring a new governess for the boys. I still plan to do both of those things—and return with Sera sometime tomorrow afternoon. There will be a wedding. It will be as soon as possible. You might as well send word for the Second Sons to come so they might witness our vows.”
“I will send messengers to all three first thing tomorrow morning,” Percy promised. “I will ask that they come immediately to Woodbridge.”
“I will also make certain Lord and Lady Westlake come, as well. Sera will want them there. Thank you for sharing with me where she is.” He looked to Minta. “I promise you this—I will make Sera happy. Always.”
