“Yes, that’s correct. Everett’s brother died instantly, while Lord Danbury’s brother lingered from severe injuries and never awoke. The new earl says that he has much to learn about his earldom and has no interest in a wife now or for several years to come. Even if I did want to consider him as a husband, I am already four and twenty. I don’t have the time to wait for years to see if he might be interested in me.”
“And yet he doesn’t want to seem to allow any other gentleman to be interested in you.”
“It is worse, Uncle. We had terrible words just now. He was bossing me about. Practically ordering me not to have anything to do with a gentleman he believes is unsuitable. My opinion of this man is far different.”
“Then you should follow your instincts, Louisa. You have always had a maturity about you, even when you were a little girl. If you think this man should be given a chance, do so. Lord Danbury can bugger off.”
She laughed and he joined in.
“As far as protecting you, that is my role with your father out of the country. Shall I speak to this earl and set him straight?”
“I don’t think that will be necessary, Uncle. I made it perfectly clear to him. If he does become annoying, then I will let you have at him.”
“Agreed.”
Louisa caught movement from the corners of her eyes and turned, seeing the nursery governess had returned.
“Thank you for allowing me to have a quick cup of tea, my lord.”
“I enjoyed the time alone with Analise,” he said. “And I got to have a lovely visit with my niece.” He looked to Louisa. “We should go downstairs and rejoin the others, however.”
She took the arm he offered and they left the nursery.
“Everyone will be on the terrace. Adalyn was serving light refreshments after our ride and before we begin lawn bowling.”
They went outside and found the terrace crowded. Immediately, her aunt waved them over, giving Louisa a warm embrace.
“Oh, my dear, I have missed you so. Town wasn’t the same without you. I hope you are still coming to Conley Park with us once the house party concludes.”
“I am not certain of my plans, Aunt. Adalyn wishes me to stay here with her while she is increasing.”
“I understand, dear. Know that you are always welcome to come to us when you are ready. Have you word from your father?”
“Not in two weeks. I should be due for another letter soon.”
Lord Hurley joined them. “I do not believe I have been introduced to our newcomers,” he said.
“Then I will do the honors, my lord. This is Lord and Lady Uxbridge, Her Grace’s parents. This is Lord Hurley, who served with His Grace in the army and has recently assumed his title.”
Her uncle brightened. “I do love the military. Wish I could have gone into it myself. Tell us a little about your experiences, Lord Hurley.”
As he told several stories, Louisa believed it was a sanitized version of war the viscount spoke of. She glanced about, noticing that Tessa was missing.
And that Owen stood off to himself, apart from the group.
Spencer caught her eye and she excused herself, going to him.
“Is something wrong with Tessa? I see she is not here. Uncle Uxbridge and I just came from the nursery. Analise has gone down for a nap.”
“Tessa stormed out of here after having a conversation with Owen. I have already made clear to him that he is to apologize for whatever he said that upset her. Her leaving caused a bit of a stir, which is why I did not follow her. Would you go see if she is all right?”
“Of course.”
Louisa slipped from the terrace, wondering where Tessa might have gone. She guessed Adalyn’s small parlor and went there first. Sure enough, the door was closed so she knocked softly and heard Tessa bid her to enter.
Her cousin looked out of sorts and she went and gave her a hug.
“I heard Owen upset you somehow. Spencer sent me to find you.”
