She thought that unusual, believing a duke would naturally be thinking of an heir. But Louisa saw Everett glance at his wife and realized he truly did want a daughter.
“I just want a healthy child,” Adalyn said as her husband took her hand and threaded her fingers with his. “Ev wants at least six children. Hopefully, not all of them will be girls. He does need an heir.”
Everett smiled. “An heir will come when the time is right. I am eager to fill Cliffside with the sounds of children squealing and running through the halls.”
Louisa had known of Everett’s desire for many children and couldn’t help but smile. He and Adalyn were such a wonderful match.
“Addie would appreciate having your company,” Everett said. “You are as sisters. It would only be right for you to be together at such a happy time.”
“I will be available to stay as long as Adalyn wishes,” she promised.
Tea arrived and as Adalyn poured out for them, Everett suggested various sandwiches and cakes for Louisa to try.
“Louisa hasn’t ridden in a good many years, Ev,” Addie said. “During the house party, it is likely people will go out riding every day. She could use someone to help refresh her riding skills and give her confidence on a horse.”
A look passed between the couple, something conveyed without words that Louisa couldn’t begin to guess at. Everett nodded and smiled pleasantly. He turned back to Louisa.
“I have the perfect person to reacquaint you with horses. Owen is our closest neighbor and will be attending the house party. He is also my oldest friend.”
“But I thought he was in the army. With Bonaparte’s abdication, has he been granted leave for a short while?”
Everett shook his head. “No. Owen is now the Earl of Danbury. In fact, I am spending all day tomorrow with him. I think I will invite him for dinner so that you might become better acquainted.”
