“Shall we go to the buffet, my lord?” Adalyn asked, hoping to draw her partner away from the table, where Spencer and Ev looked openly hostile.

“It is far too crowded to do so, my lady,” Lord Rosewell told her and then turned to speak with Louisa, who looked puzzled.

“I have never minded a crowd,” Spencer said, rising. “I will be back with everything you like, love,” he told Tessa and strode off.

Ev also rose. “Why don’t you accompany me to the buffet table, Lady Adalyn? It is my first time at a midnight supper. You might have some interesting suggestions for me.”

“I would be delighted to help you, Your Grace.”

He pulled out her chair and she rose, feeling perturbed that Lord Rosewell was totally ignoring her. The earl glanced up and smiled lazily at her and said, “If you would get a sweet or two for me, that will be enough.” He turned back to Louisa.

Adalyn let Ev lead her away. The moment they were out of earshot, he turned angrily to her.

“What are you doing with a man like that?”
