“And rather fun,” he told her, climbing up into the vehicle and turning back to her.
He bent and grasped her waist, lifting her with ease as he placed her on the seat. Joining her, she heard the blood pounding in her ears as she realized how close their contact would be. Her entire side was nestled against his, the intimacy daunting.
And very appealing.
Spencer took up the reins and clucked his tongue and the pair of horses began trotting away.
“This is a long way from the ground,” she commented. “And those wheels are incredible in size.”
“The higher perch makes for bigger wheels. That allows for greater speed. I gather racing phaetons is something common for gentlemen of theton.”
“Would your ever race?” she asked him, already worried about his inexperience with the vehicle, though he seemed to be handling it with ease.
“No. I don’t see the point in those kinds of competitions. It would be too easy for the phaeton to turn over, injuring the horses.”
“Or you,” she pointed out.
Spencer glanced to her. “Would that upset you? If I were to be injured?”
She looked away and faced the road ahead. “It would upset me if anyone of my acquaintance were to be injured,” she said primly, ignoring his chuckling.
As they reached the park, Tessa saw the line of vehicles trying to enter. Dismay filled her. He seemed in tune with her feelings and slowed the phaeton before pulling it to the side of the street and bringing it to a complete halt.
“Do you not wish to drive through the park? It is the fashionable hour.” He paused. “Or would you rather not be seen in my company?”
“No, it isn’t that at all,” she reassured him. “It is . . . so congested. My idea had been to take in this lovely day in an open-aired vehicle and enjoy good conversation as we enjoyed the weather.” Her nose crinkled. “With the road so clogged and so many people there, the idea of a drive doesn’t appeal to me much anymore.”
“You don’t wish to be around others?”
Tessa laughed. “I got my fill of being around others in the crowded ballroom last night. As much as I enjoy dancing, there were times I wished I had a bit of elbow room.”
“I agree. And with my calendar full of events, I fear getting a moment’s respite from crowds will be hard to come by.” He paused. “I have another idea, though. One which would help us to enjoy the day and the ride. Do you trust me?”
God help her, she did. “Yes.”
A slow smile caused his mouth to turn up. “Then you are in for a treat.”
