She shrugged and nonchalantly said, “I told her we either would further our acquaintance and see if we might suit or we wouldn’t. That it was no business of hers.”

“It isn’t her business and never will be. I find Miss Allen remarkably tiresome.” He paused. “I only hope you meant what you told her. That you will give me a chance to get to know you better.”

“I have no plans to do so, Lord Middlefield. I merely thought Miss Allen overstepped her bounds. You may get to know whomever you wish. I have told you I have no interest in you.”

He gave her a long look. “And yet we have now kissed twice. I have found both times extremely enjoyable.”

She huffed, “What if we did? I have now been kissed and know what to expect. I will have your kiss to compare to others and theirs.”

She saw anger spark in his eyes but he coolly said, “What we have is special, Tessa. You will come to believe that.”

“What I believe is that you think much too much of yourself, my lord.”

With that, she rapped on the door.
