“You do not,” Adalyn said.
Tessa turned. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
“You have led a sedate life, Tessa, especially the last several years, with your parents ill and then you in mourning.” Adalyn gazed at her. “It is time you started living again, especially since we are on the cusp of the Season. It is a good thing Lord Middlefield is interested in you. Others will see that and it will pique their interests, as well. Men are odd creatures, Cousin. They see a man wanting something—and they decide they want it, too. And that includes women. It could be to your benefit.”
“I don’t know, Adalyn,” she said, unsure of everything that was happening.
“Let us go to the drawing room,” Louisa suggested. “It is time we made an appearance. You can meet those invited and especially the two bachelors I spoke of, Lord Ellington and Lord Wethersby.”
“Don’t forget to enjoy yourself, Tessa,” Adalyn admonished. “The Season is about fun. Getting to know others. Seeing and being seen.” She gave Tessa a long look. “I have a feeling you will find a husband with ease. You are smart and beautiful and very kind.”
Louisa tucked her arm into Tessa’s. “Come along.”
She did so, tamping down the nerves that filled her. Tessa told herself it was because she would be meeting so many new people tonight. But she knew she was lying to herself. She always looked forward to getting to know others. Her jitters had nothing to do with tonight’s dinner party guests.
And everything to do with Lord Middlefield.
