I hadn’t even thought to ask. All I was focusing on was her and her mother’s health.

“Skye.”

My heart stalls.

Finn clears his throat as if the emotions tied to that name make it difficult to speak. “Skye Hazel McAllister.”

Bernie wails.

I crouch down on my haunches and cry. Finn’s little girl bears the names of Daynah’s two mothers: biological and adopted. It couldn’t be more perfect.

“Not sure when we’ll be home,” Finn voice cuts through, bringing me back to this fucking life-changing moment for Finn and my sister. They deserve this happiness, more than anyone. “I guess we’ll find out more in the next day or two, so I’ll keep you posted.” Voices mutter in the background. “Sorry, I’ve gotta go, but can you guys fill everyone in until I get the chance to ring? Just tell ’em everything’s sweet.”

“’Course.”

After finishing the call, Bernie and I hug each other for what seems like the longest time. The relief, the tears, it’s what I need to keep pushing on.

Finn is a father and Daynah a mother to a sweet little girl with a strong heart.

Everything is right in the world.

“You tell the guys, I’ll go share the news,” Bernie says and walks off in the direction of the main house.

I turn towards the shelter, and with my thumb and index finger to my mouth make an ear-piercing whistle. All heads swing in my direction. “I’ve got some news, boys!”

“Oh yeah?” Red stands and secures his hat, his sweaty ginger mullet curled at his ears.

“Finn’s got himself a daughter.” I yank off my dusty hat and throw it in the air.

Halle-fucking-lujah.
