Except I can’t. My soul won’t allow it. I need to go to him.
So I do.
Rushing forward, I jog through the snow in my wolf form until I reach Kellan. He lies on his side, completely naked and bitten, beaten. Freezing cold. His skin turns blue, and I’m not sure if he’s trapped in his human form because of the pain or not.
Panic snaps through me, and I don’t have to see to know that Rocco stalks in my direction. My muscles spasm, and I bend forward, letting my human form take control.
I ignore the rumbling growl from behind me and slide my arms under Kellan, using all my strength to reposition him. I pull him onto my lap and kiss his temple, showering every inch of his face with my affection. I meet Rocco’s gaze, his wolf eyes narrowing on me with his ears pointing toward the sky. His curiosity over my lack of fear slows him down. He’s so focused on me that he doesn’t see Slater against the white snow.
A smile curves my lips, and I kiss Kellan again. “You’re going to be okay. I’m here now. I’ll take care of you.”
Slater launches at Rocco, sinking his teeth into his throat. He yanks the wolf off his paws and drags him so quickly to the edge of the hill that he can’t do anything as Slater transforms and uses his strength as a man to lift Rocco as a beast and tosses him over the edge.
He howls and barks, his body slipping and sliding until he disappears out of view, tumbling through the haze of what I think might be some sort of portal.
He’s gone.
If only I knew it would be forever.

Reunited
Istandattheedge of the bed, peering down at Kellan. “I want to be so mad at you for trying to demand that I leave you at Rocco’s mercy, but I just need to cuddle the hell out of you. I was so scared.”
Kellan stretches his arms out, groaning with the movement. “Come here. Your closeness alone eases my pain. I’ve been dreaming of this moment every night since being forced away.”
“Take it easy on him, pup. He might claim to be okay, but he needs to heal.” Slater stands in the doorway, finally speaking up.
He surprisingly offered to share his room with Kellan but not without reason. I know he wants to keep me close. For barely knowing me, he’s already annoyingly overprotective.
“What we need is for you to find the Sunset Pointe pack,” I say, peering at him from over my shoulder. “Please. If Crystalrock is still out there with Twilight Cove...” I don’t even know what will happen. Twilight Cove should follow their alpha into the next territory, but who’s to say they will actually comply? Some of them seem like the type to just take advantage of the situation. Kind of like with the female betaborne from Sea Glimmer.
With the thought of Sloan, I can’t help but wonder if she’s okay. I don’t know where I’d be without her help.
I tuck the thought away, hoping to bring it up later when things settle down. Now isn’t the time. I’m more concerned with the possible battles. I’m worried that I’ll never be united with the rest of the men that made me a promise.
“I will see if Sunset Pointe would be interested in an alliance. We have always been neutral toward each other, but they need to know that it’s unacceptable to be on the Ice Meadow territory without permission. I expect an apology and not to be disregarded.” Slater folds his arms over his chest, remaining firm in his posture.
I hope Ravi isn’t an ass about it. I can just see him banging his chest and shouting that I’m his omega all the way from here. I swear, if he doesn’t keep his act together, he’s going to be the one in trouble.
“That sounds fair enough. But please, let them know I’m safe and that I have Kellan. Make sure they know that you weren’t responsible for any of this. I don’t know Ravi well enough to predict his reaction, but he could fall to his predatory side. He’s a bit different than you are.” I slowly turn back to Kellan, offering him a small smile. “So he knows it’s not some sort of trap, tell him that his princess expects him to act like a king and not a jester.”
I just hope that’s enough. Ravi is a smart man. But his wolf? He’s dangerous. That’s nothing new. All of the wolves of Shadow Moon Island have a dark, monstrous side. Including me.
“Princess, huh?” Slater lifts his eyebrow with his comment. “You should be his damn queen.”
I shake my head and turn my attention away from him, knowing that if I continue the conversation, he might never go. Slater is the type to use my questions and comments as a way to stay close. I know he’s attracted to me, and he has that whole alpha need going on, so I must stop him now. I need to focus on Kellan.
With how Slater turns around and leaves me and Kellan alone, closing the door without another word, proves that he is unlike any other man I’ve met. Ravi would’ve probably complained. Even the other guys would. They wouldn’t want to leave.
It makes me feel a bit better about this whole situation.
“Ravi will not let you stay, my love. You need to brace yourself for a fight. Alphas don’t do well with other alphas.” Kellan grazes his fingers to the side of my hand, getting me to look at him.
“I don’t plan to stay, Kellan. As soon as we have the chance, we’re returning to the human world. I’m taking you with me.” I sit down beside him, scooting onto the bed and snuggling in close. He wraps his arm over my shoulders and touches my chin, not letting me say another word until he has a chance to kiss me. Our lips graze together, and I give into his desperation for my affection. The sweetness of his mouth turns me on, and I deepen our kiss, slipping my tongue into his mouth until his hands slide up my back, and he combs his fingers into my hair and pulls me impossibly close, guiding me to straddle him despite his injuries.
