What am I thinking? I know better than to feel this way. If I like him too much, I’ll get hurt. Or he will. We don’t know what’s going to happen. He picks up his pace, pounding me harder and faster, making the leaves rustle. But I don’t care. We’re high up enough that we’ll have a warning if somebody tries to attack. The rocks will make it more difficult as well. For the first time in a while, even in this tree, even as exposed as I am, I feel safe. Adam makes me feel safe. He makes me feel capable.
I comb my fingers through his hair, memorizing how hot he is, how his muscles flex, and how his body feels in mine. He kisses me again, more desperately, nipping and sucking my bottom lip between his teeth. He digs his fingers into my ass cheeks with a grunt and breaks away from my mouth. He comes, thrusting a few more times, his breathing as hard as mine.
“Fuck, I wish we were somewhere else. I want to cuddle the fuck out of you and go at it again for the rest of the night. I think I’m addicted.” Adam murmurs the words in my ear, kissing the skin right below. I shiver and smile, resting my head on his shoulder. Clean up is going to be a bitch. I didn’t really think things through. But I guess it’s whatever now. It’s not like we have the luxury of showering.
“You can use my shorts as a cumrag if you want.” It’s like Adam can read my mind. His face softens, and he cocks his head. “Holy shit. I can.”
I blink my eyes and lean back, meeting his gaze. “What are you talking about?”
He tightens his mouth and cups my cheek with his hand. “Eliana, can you hear this?”
I tense, hearing the words but his mouth never moves. It’s just like with Kellan. And holy fucking shit is right. What does this mean?
“Whoa. I don’t understand. Kellan claimed that he was my soulmate, and we were connected, which left me open for him. Wolves communicate telepathically a lot of times, but he was able to do so while I was human because his wolf picked me. He claimed that I was his.” My heart races, and I can’t help capturing Adam with my eyes. I stare into his hazel irises, trying to decipher the confusion washing between us. It’s a blend of his emotions and mine, wrapped up with lust and something else. Something sweet yet terrifying.
“Do you think this means we’ve been moon chosen?” he asks, searching my face. He darts his gaze away from mine and stares at the water behind me as the moon crawls across the sky, nearly full.
I ease myself off him, needing to step into the moonlight. I don’t know what it is about this moment, but he might be right. I feel as if my body can heal under the light of the moon. Especially with him by my side.
He swings down, dropping back to the rocks. Extending his arms, he waits for me to slide down. He catches me and steadies me on my feet, my knees weak from the night and our passion. Just from everything happening around me.
Reaching up, I grab the sleeve of Adam’s shirt and pull it out of the way, looking at his bite mark. It’s the strangest thing, seeing the spiderwebs of color crawl over his skin, but he doesn’t transform yet.
I twist to look at my leg, seeing the same thing. Our bites are nearly identical. “I don’t know exactly what this means, or what we are going to go through, but I don’t think we’re going to die.”
“I think you’re right, Eliana. I hear something. Someone. It’s another voice in my head. Can you hear it?” Adam rubs his hands against his ears and shakes his head. “There’s a lot. More and more keep adding to the mix.”
I close my eyes and try to listen, trying to hear what he hears. Nothing breaks through. Only Adam questioning what the hell is going on. He shifts on his feet and peers around. A howl cuts through the night, striking me to my very soul.
“Fuck. They’re getting ready. We need to hurry and get to the others.” Adam pulls me along the rocks and back to our raft. “I don’t see any boats. I think we should head down the coast and see if we can spot anything. They won’t be able to move fast enough to get us in the water.”
I help him move the palm fronds out of the way. “What if we’re too late? What if somebody catches us?”
“We have to do this, Eliana. If we are transforming, we need to heed to the call of the moon. I don’t think we’re going to have a choice.” He frowns with his words as if he hates saying them.
I can’t blame him.
“We’ve never had one. Maybe things can change.” I know it’s wishful thinking, but something about this night feels as if more possibilities have opened. It’s hard to explain.
“I’m willing to try. But I think we need a pack to survive this.” He pulls the boat along until the waves swell around our ankles.
“Then we will make our own. I’m not going with any of these assholes, especially not the one who bit me.” I peer again at the moon.
“Fuck yeah. That’s what I want to hear. You can be our leader. Maybe we can still get off this island.” He leans in and kisses me.
Like my grandma.
I don’t want any other fate.
I want to return to human civilization.
I’ll never accept my place among the lykoswulf packs. They’ll never have us.
