Slapping my hands together, I summon angelic light for the first time since taking this body. Tamia’s eyes widen, and she takes an automatic step back in fear. A deep, guttural snarl rips through the air. Micah sets his attention on me, summoning orange power between his palms.
“Wait!” I yell, hoping that Micah doesn’t attack and gives me a chance to speak.
I should’ve realized that it’s not him I should be worried about, because I barely have time to move out of the way as a burst of ruby power explodes in front of me. Tamia uses Hell power to drag my attention from Micah. I have no choice but to chuck my heavenly light at her, getting her to back up.
“Fuck! Dante! The doctor!” Raven’s familiar voice echoes through the lobby. My whole body screams with an intense need unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
As if my soul takes control over my mind, I rush forward and toward Raven without thinking. I don’t make it far before an orb of red power crashes into my chest, stealing my breath away.
“You’re going to fucking burn in the pits, you asshole!” Kase yells, launching toward me in his devil form. “How did you even get through the shield? No human or angel should’ve been able to pass.”
I open my mouth to tell him that it’s because I’m fucking Elias, but I don’t get the chance. A blinding light steals my vision, the whole room lighting aglow with heavenly power. I shield my eyes, trying to see where it comes from.
My heart pounds at the sight of Raven in a halo of breathtaking light.
All of the devils and demons yell and shout, but they can’t do anything as the ground cracks open, and they fall into their kingdoms.
Raven screams, her eyes wide in fear.
I don’t rush to her. I’m afraid of scaring her.
“Raven, it’s time. The Higher Power has fated it to be this way,” a familiar voice says as the world dims. Cassius stands at the entrance of the lobby. “Don’t make this hard. We will not hurt you. But you and Elias need to come with me.”
He doesn’t look at me as he says the words. I don’t think he sees me at all. I must be shielding myself in a way that I didn’t know was possible.
“Heaven was mistaken. I am not carrying Elias’s soul. So stay the fuck back. I’m not going with you,” Raven says, her body trembling.
“What do you mean? I’ve seen it for myself.” Cassius flaps his wings, sauntering forward while Raven steps back.
He’s going to grab her. He’s not going to give her a choice.
I do the only thing I can think of. I launch from my place and jump on his back.
But Cassius doesn’t hit the floor.
He propels the two of us forward, flinging his arms around Raven.
We all fall into another plane.
Chapter 11
RAVEN
Reason
“I’LL RIP YOUR wings off!” I scream, my voice ringing through the air. Fear and anger collide through me as the Mortal Realm melts away, leaving me in a strange place of light.
I hit my back on the ground, the icy sensation burning my skin even though it’s not hot. Cassius slams his palms on each side of my face, holding his weight up so as not to squish me. Another man, one I’ve never seen before, clings to his back. Swinging his fist, the strange man whacks Cassius in the side of his head.
“Let her go, or I will send you to fucking Hell,” the man yells, punching Cassius again. “She’s mine! You can’t take her!”
What the fuck is he talking about? I have never seen this guy in my life. But a part of me doesn’t fear him. He’s helping me. I don’t understand.
Cassius jerks his head back, smacking the guy in the face. Blood sprays across me, and I manage to break my hand free from between Cassius and me. Clawing my fingers, I scratch Cassius across the cheek. It’s enough of a distraction that the guy manages to put Cassius in a chokehold, and the two of them flip off me.
I scramble to my feet, my heart clattering around my rib cage. It’s hard for me to breathe. The terror rushing through me at watching my own body turn against my devils to send them to Hell still lingers with me.
I can’t believe that happened. Why did it happen?
