Most immortals didn’t succumb to harsh weather so the prisoners down here most likely didn’t die from hypothermia.
Unfortunately for Eva, she wasn’tmostimmortals. She was a sorceress, a species whose creation was nothing more than the product of a witch’s spell. Sorceresses had more mortal traits than any being in the unnatural world, and easily succumbing to harsh weather was one of those mortal traits.
Clearly, these dungeons weren’t meant to hold a sorceress for an extended period of time. Understanding that Artem wanted her to live, he must have been ignorant to the fact that she may not last another day down here, but every time she tried to tell the smug vampire guarding her cell exactly that, he did nothing but ignore her.
“If I die that’s on you,” she had told him yesterday as she pressed her body against the cold corner of her cell in a botched attempt to warm up.
This wasbrutal.
Believing she didn’t have much longer left, she asked the large vampire standing in front of her cell, “C-can y-you get me a b-b-blanket?” Shit, she couldn’t even speak right. Maybe she was going to die from hypothermia sooner than she originally thought. “If y-you d-don’t, I’ll die. Artem w-will blame y-you!” That was the truth.
Gods, she was incredibly sleepy, and she was currently terrified of sleeping, fearing her next nap would be her last, but she couldn’t stand the thought of staying awake.
The dark haired vampire turned to look at her, a hint of worry in his eyes.Finally.“You’re… you’re freezing!” His red eyes grew wide.
Did she looked like she was freezing? Oh well, she was too tired to care anymore. Her eyes began to close, a sort of comfort warming her.
“Shit!”The guard yelled before scurrying away. Probably to Artem. Obviously, she was right. Artemwouldblame him. He’d probably kill that guard too.
Artem terrified everyone.
Except Darius, she couldn’t help but think in her sleep-like state, recalling her vision.Darius isn’t scared of him.
Correction - Darius wasn’tgoingto be scared of him at some point in the future. Darius might be scared of Artem now, but he wouldn’t be for long. Because hewas going to betray that asshole. She saw it in her prediction. Whatever hold Artem held on Darius wasn’t going to last forever.
Eva thought back to the conversation Darius and Artem had the other day after exhaustion began taking over her. Artem referred to Eva as Darius’ lifeblood.
Darius didn’t deny it.
Which meant… Eva reallywashis lifeblood. She had believed so, but she also had her doubts. Now she had no doubts at all.
Of course, that only meant Darius betrayed her - hislifeblood. Talk about a knock to her self-esteem.
Except after meeting Karina, Eva wondered if anyone could possibly let that sweet girl down. Anyone would betray another to save her, even betraying their own lifeblood.
Eva let out another yawn, her eyes growing heavier. At least now she would die knowing Darius had a good enough reason to betray her.
Only a little blow to my self-esteem. I can die in peace.
As Eva began to make peace with her lonely life, the sound of a door swinging open somewhere down the dungeon’s hall, followed by the sound of scrambling footsteps, almost caused her to will her eyes open with curiosity.
Almost.
Was it the guard? Would he finally bring her a blanket?
She didn’t care. She no longer felt cold and was too tired to worry about it. At this point, she would sleep perfectly fine without a blanket.
“Eva!” A familiar voice shouted. “Wake up! We’re getting you out of here!” It was Darius. It was a shame she was so tired. She was just starting to like him.
“Darius, she’s going to die. It’s too cold down here for her.” Eva recognized that voice as Karina’s.
“Too cold?” Darius didn’t seem to understand what his sister was saying.
“She’s only a sorceress. She can’t survive the elements like we can.” Very true, though Eva felt much warmer now.
Though Eva’s eyes were closed, she could hear clanking, as if a key was frantically being turned in a lock.
“Eva!Stay with us dammit!” She heard the sound of the door to her cell swinging open just before warm arms wrapped around her, hauling her off the ground. “She’s freezing!” Darius shouted, the sound of his voice so near her. She was lifted from the ground. “Eva, stay awake for me. Will you? Please! Stay with me for fuck’s sake!”
