“Tell her to stick to the path, not to venture onto the grass,” Void said, holding a hand to his bleeding gut.
“Why?” Luther asked, keeping his gaze locked with the human’s.
“Just trust me.”
Again with that statement. Luther didn’t trust him. Luther trusted no one. Nevertheless, he told the human to stay on the concrete pathway and then he pushed her lightly towards their target.
The human moved immediately, purpose in her stride as she approached Lucas. Axel moved to Luther’s side, watching the human stroke her hand down the shifter’s chest.
“Will he not become suspicious of her? Will he not wonder what she’s doing all the way out here on her own?”
“No,” Void said, joining them at their side. “Lucas only thinks with his dick. He won’t wonder why she’s out here. All he’ll see is a pair of tits and a hole to stuff his dick into. It’s one of the reasons why he’s always placed on a perimeter portal. He can’t be trusted with anything more substantial than that. He guards the right and Viktor guards the left.”
Exactly as Void predicted, Lucas abandoned his post and followed the human into the forest surrounding the estate with lust-filled eyes.
“You seem to know a lot of Barnabas’ defences,” Axel stated, somewhat curious.
“I should, I was one of his Beta guards. That’s how I knew Lucas would be the easiest to manipulate.” Void cracked his knuckles and eyed the rotating cameras, waiting for the right time to move. He gave Luther the side eye. “This is going to be a bit harder than I anticipated now that I have a giant hand-sized hole in my gut.”
“You’ll heal,” Luther replied dismissively.
“You’re a real ass, you know that?”
Luther’s eyes flashed red. “Just do your damn job and get over that fucking wall.”
Void saluted with the middle finger. “As His Highness commands.” And then he was off, sprinting across the wide open field towards the stone walls.
He was quick, quicker than Luther expected him to be. He dashed from side to side to avoid certain sections of the ground as he ran, light as a feather on his feet.
“Land mines?” Axel frowned, watching Void leap from one foot to the other.
“Possibly,” Luther replied, mildly amused as Void pounced all over the place.
“Smart. If you didn’t know they were there, you’d give away your attack before you even got close.”
Void jumped, gripped the top of the stone wall and pulled himself up, disappearing over the other side before the camera could swing back.
Luther resisted the urge to pace as he waited for the shifter to return, his hands twitching at his side. He was sick of wasting time. He needed to move, be mobile. To dosomething. And yet all he could do was stand around and wait here for that idiot to return.
Ophelia hovered around him, her eyes watching him intently, and her mere presence aggravated him.
“It is quite an impressive home base,” Axel said, studying the estate with a critical eye. “Thick stone walls, high-tech cameras, a powerful Ward spell, land mines, guard patrol…Barnabas likes to cover all bases.”
Luther grunted. He wasn’t in the mood to compliment the Alpha shifter on his defences, even if they were superb.
Groans of pleasure reached his ears, his vampire hearing picking up the sounds of Lucas and the human fucking a short distance away.
It grated on his nerves, making him grind his teeth. For once, he wished he didn’t have superior hearing. That was just something he didn’t need to hear.
Void had better return soon or he was liable to kill that damn shifter who couldn’t stop making those stupid sex noises. He sounded like a screeching cat.
After what felt like hours—though Luther was sure it had only been ten minutes or so—Void’s head popped up from behind the stone walls. He darted his head left to right, checking the coast was clear before leaping over and landing on the other side.
He manoeuvred quickly through the maze of land mines and rushed back to their position.
“Fuck, she ain’t here,” he panted, slightly out of breath.
“Did you look properly? You were not gone long,” Luther snapped.
