I had to pull off something big if I wanted a hope of getting out of here with my life intact. If I had a slight chance of making sure as many of the prisoners got out alive. The last thing I needed was for more loss, and because of me.

I dug deep into my magic and called it easily to me. Much more easily than before. Strong wind rushed around me, and dark clouds started to form high above my head. The metal of the warehouse started to bend and groan. Moisture chilled my skin as I continued to call on my power. Lightning and thunder filled the air, adding to the destruction.

I was angry, and they were going to have hell rain down on their heads for all the hateful acts they have done.

Each figure that charged forward was blown back by a massive gust of wind or blasted away with an enormous bolt of purple lightning. I maintained my focus to keep my spell from faltering. I needed to give everyone time to get out and away. But I wasn’t sure how much longer that was going to be.

However long I had left, I was going to use every second to my advantage.

“Savannah!” Liam shouted.

“Get the girls out and go, now!” I called out, avoiding looking at him.

“Savannah let’s go!” Jacob shouted.

I shook my head, still hanging on to my focus. “No, get everyone out. Get to safety.”

I waited for Noah to try and talk me out of what I was doing, but he never did. I wouldn’t have listened anyway. He probably realized that and took the time he had left to help the rest of the girls out of the warehouse.

Just a few minutes longer, I held my power steady, but I started to feel the drain it was having on me. I had pushed this long enough. With the hope that everyone got out okay, I squeezed my eyes closed and let go of my power.

A large explosion of energy and wind exploded from me. The members of the group that still stood surrounding me were tossed back. Dust erupted all around me. And in the silent moments that followed, everything was still.

I peeled open my eyes and settled them on the warehouse that was reduced to nothing but rubble and mangled sheet metal.

Watching my steps carefully, I climbed out of the debris and joined the men. Liam was on the phone, calling for backup while Jacob checked on the others and Noah attended to his sister.

I joined her, relieved she was safe and alive. The second her eyes laid on me, she threw her arms around me and sobbed. I held onto my dear friend until her cries slowly faded.

“Are you hurt?” I asked.

She shook her head and then shrugged. The baby started to fuss in her arms again. “I don’t know.”

I nodded. “We’ll get you all checked out.”

She nodded and her voice came out strained when she said, “They were torturing us, Savannah.”

Her bright blue eyes were wide with fear. I knew her words to be true. But I never realized the depth of the truth. Because within her eyes, there was something missing. Something huge. Something she was never going to get back.

My heart raced.

“Avery, what happened to you?” I asked, trying to keep the fear from my voice.

“They killed her,” she said.

“Who? The mother?” I asked.

She shook her head and dropped her gaze to the ground. “My dragon.”

My blood turned cold. How was Avery still alive? It didn’t make sense to me. Her dragon was somehow dead. How did the group pull that off? What was their endgame in this?

“The witches? Half of them don’t have powers anymore,” she added. “Those monsters took everything from us.”

I nodded and pulled her into my arms. “You’re safe now. You all are. The nightmare is over.”

“What about the baby?” Noah asked. “What do we do with it?”

“I made a promise. One I’m going to keep,” she said. “I’m going to see this through, take her home.”
