He nodded. “Give me about five minutes to dress and I’ll let you know.”

I nodded. “You could just talk to me as you’re putting your clothes on.”

“Good point,” he said and chuckled to himself.

It was very nice seeing Jacob let go of his stony exterior. He was so much more relaxed and carefree. I followed him into his room then sat cross-legged on his mattress, still holding onto the coffee, and taking sips as Jacob found his clothing and started pulling them on.

“So, you passed out,” he started.

“I know about that,” I said and smiled.

“Right after Liam and Noah showed up,” he added.

I stiffened and leveled my gaze on the man in front of me. When I spoke, my voice came out flat. “Are you fucking kidding me? We are trying to protect Noah, not bring him everywhere with us.”

“I wish I was kidding, babe. Believe me.” He shook his head. “I was as confused about it as you are.”

I sighed and tried to ignore the funny little flip my heart did when he called me babe. I took in another breath and refocused. “Okay, fine. That happened. What happened to the group?”

“Your guess is as good as mine,” he said.

“Not helpful,” I said.

“I understand that,” he said as he gathered some clothes.

“And why did we come here?” I asked.

I pointed a finger to his bed, but I was referring to his place in general.

“Your place was compromised.” His eyes fell to mine, and he stood as still as possible.

I stared at him, waiting for the punchline of the joke, but one never came. “No really, tell me.”

“I already did,” he said.

I stood up from the bed and nearly sloshed coffee over the rim of my mug and onto Jacob’s pristine dark wood floors. “What!”

He held up his hands. “The whole place was ransacked. I didn’t think it was safe to leave you there, so I brought you here.”

I found it hard to pinpoint what emotion flooded through my system more. I was disappointed, angry, hurt, frustrated, sad, and vengeful… all at the same time. I hated that I couldn’t go home now. I hated that my life sat in a home I couldn’t return to until this damn case was over with.

And trust and believe, I had every intention of making that happen sooner rather than later. The anonymous group didn’t know it yet, but they fucked up when they came after my best friend. Even more so when they went after my home.

My home was my sanctuary. My haven. My sacred space.

Never fuck with a witch, and fuck with her home even less.

Jacob shifted his weight from one foot to the other as he stared at me cautiously. I realized the air had filled with static and little balls of energy that burst like tiny fireworks. Not only was I angry, but I was about to set the air in Jacob’s room on fire.

I let out a deep breath to force the tension away. Once my shoulders eased, the air cleared. “Sorry.”

“I understand what you must be feeling,” he said shoving his hands into his jeans he had just pulled on.

“So, where did Noah and Jacob head off to?” I asked, reclaiming my seat as he searched for a t-shirt.

“About that, that fire we ran from like our life depended on it,” he started.

“You mean the one that singed my hair?” I asked and ran my fingers through it. I hadn’t thought about the damage the flames had done until Jacob brought it up again.
