This time there were six of the men covered in solid black. And much like the last time, there were no discernable features. They took their anonymity seriously, going as far as to make sure they were covered from head to toe, not leaving a speck of skin exposed.

“They really mean business this time,” I said and steadied my breathing, preparing for another deadly fight. Because I was sure that was what their intent was. This time, they were going to make sure either me, Jacob, or both of us were dead and out of the way.

“It’s a good thing I mean business too.” Jacob said and then stepped in front of me and squared his shoulders toward the figures. “I highly suggest you turn around and walk the other way.”

Oh, Jacob, I thought. They don’t deal in threats.

And they didn’t. Far as I was concerned, they delivered on their promises.

In response, the six of them took a step closer, seemingly unimpressed with Jacob’s warning.

“I’m warning you, turn around now, and this won’t have to get bloody.”

They took another step closer.

“I don’t think they believed you,” I said.

Jacob’s body started to vibrate, which was the tell-tale sign of the beginning stages of his shift. I stared and watched as he continued to remain in his human form. He stopped trying to shift, ceasing with the vibrations, and took a deep breath and stared at his hands.

“What the—” He turned to face me. “How are they stopping my shift?”

I shook my head and dug into my magic. I tried to pull it past my wrists, but it was no use. “I don’t have my magic either.”

“But how?” he asked, shocked with an edge of fear.

I shook my head. “They know what we are. That’s the only explanation for this.”

“Is this what happened last time?” he asked.

I nodded with a frown.

He took one last glance at his hands before forming fists. “Guess that means we have to take care of them the old-fashioned way.”

I nodded and curled my hands into fists, holding them in front of my face. “I’m right there with you. Don’t underestimate them. They pack a lot more strength than they look.”

“That’s good to know,” Jacob said and stared the group down.

“All right,” I said to the group. “Let’s do this.”

The figures charged. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was Jacob to charge toward them as well. I kicked my feet behind me and pushed my legs to catch up with him. Within seconds, we were on each other. Three of the figures broke off to fight Jacob, leaving me with three of my own.

We were outnumbered and somehow blocked from our powers, which put us at a serious disadvantage. And what we lacked in strength and power, they made up for in spades. We needed Liam and Noah to help us win this, but they weren’t around. And it wasn’t likely that they were going to allow us to make a call for back up.

“We need Noah and Liam,” I said and dodged a couple of fists.

“Working on it,” Jacob said through a grunt. “I can’t get a break long enough to do anything but move.”

“I know,” I said as I landed a kick in one of the figure’s torso.

Somehow, someway, we would have to end this ourselves, and without losing our lives in the process.

A foot landed in my stomach. I stumbled backward, loosing my footing and falling to the ground.

For the second day in a row, I was having my ass handed to me.

I quickly stood up as my three foes surrounded me. The one in front of me landed a solid punch to my left cheek, sending me spinning to the ground. Again. I faceplanted the asphalt covering the alleyway. My breath was knocked from my lungs. I struggled to get back up. The other two picked me up and held me in place by pinning my arms behind me. I quickly sucked in a breath and prayed to the goddess for protection as the third continued to beat the ever-living crap out of me.

Several hits landed in my stomach. Another handful to both sides of my ribs. Then the guy started working on beating my face black and blue.
