“Can you hear me now?” Noah asked, checking to see if whatever glitch had happened was rectified.
She didn’t respond.
Her face drained of all the color that had filled her cheeks. Her eyes filled with tears and she stared into the screen, silently asking Noah for help. But he couldn’t help. He would be too late. And he couldn’t bring himself to move. He was also frozen in his chair with fear.
Avery glanced in the direction the sound had come from.
Noah’s eyebrows drew together as he frowned. She looked in the precise direction of the moving shadows he had caught only minutes before.
“Avery, get out of there, now!” he shouted, standing from his chair, sending it to the floor as he bent over his screen, desperately trying to help her.
But it was no use.
Avery returned her attention to the computer screen. She still seemed a little shaken but had let out a deep breath and smiled. “That was weird.”
She squinted at the screen.
“Are you still there?” she asked. “You look like you are smiling like an idiot, and not moving.”
“I’m still here,” he said. “Screen must still be frozen.”
“Noah, the screen is frozen on my end again,” she said. “I can’t hear you, if you’re talking.”
“Shit,” Noah spat out and tried to figure out why the call would be frozen on his end.
Another sound came from over the call, grabbing Noah’s attention. Avery stood stiff and her mouth was slightly open. Her breathing turned ragged.
“Noah, I think someone is in my house,” she whispered, leaning in close to the screen.
Noah clutched his hair into his fists, helpless and unable to do anything but continue to observe the intruders who had entered his sister’s home. He had to do something, but he couldn’t pull himself away, he needed to see this through. Be a witness so that he could bring justice. He ran through a list of reasons to unseat his ass and leave, but he couldn’t force his body to move. It was almost as though he was paralyzed and forced to watch his worst nightmare unfold in front of him.
He stood from his desk as the shadows morphed into human shapes. He punched his desk and screamed, “No! Avery get out of there!”
They surrounded her. A hand covered her mouth. She struggled against them, but she wasn’t strong enough.
Her eyes silently begged for him to help. But he was a useless coward. What was wrong with him? Why couldn’t he move?
So many things rushed through his mind. He formulated a plan. They wouldn’t get very far. The intruders were going to live to regret the day they tried to take his sister away from them.
Noah stared in horror and fury as three different figures captured his baby sister and walked off with her, off-screen. One of the figures stopped to turn around and face Noah. He bent at the waist and waved. Noah still stared in shock at the screen, unsure of what to do to help his sister.
The figures disappeared and the video call disconnected.
Noah’s heart rammed against his ribcage as he slowly came to terms with what he had just witnessed.
As soon as the shock had worn off, he managed to feel his body again and rushed to his balcony where he quickly shifted and launched into the air, flying as fast as he could to his sister’s place, hoping beyond all hope and reason that he would make it in time to stop them from taking her away from him for good.
If he was fast enough, he might catch Avery before it was too late.

SAVANNAH
I sat in sorrow-filled silence as Noah finished his story. We had a huge problem on our hands.
“If you would excuse us for a moment,” Liam said.
I found him joining us to be weird. He didn’t typically assist on cases. Jacob’s demeanor was exceptionally off as well. I might have acted like his presence was nothing but the norm, but the reality was far from it. What was it about Noah that had them both on guard? I had no idea, and frankly, I didn’t have time to figure it out. My best friend was missing, and I had to find her before it was too late.
