Noah smiled and clapped his hands. “That’s what I’m talking about. You see? We can get along!”

“Absolutely not,” Savannah said, voice stern. The air filled with static.

At least she had her powers back.

“Got any better ideas?” Jacob asked.

She sat up straighter, squaring her shoulders and holding her head a little higher. “As a matter of fact, I do.”

“Then let’s hear it,” he said.

“We need to try other, much more safer options first,” she said.

“Like?” I asked.

Her eyes grew wider with excitement. “I have an idea.”

SAVANNAH

I was thinking on my feet, so to speak, which was something I didn’t do well when sleep deprived. But regardless of my exhaustion, I was quickly formulating a plan in my mind. What I was thinking of had to work. I was depending on it a little too much for it not to, despite realizing desperation wasn’t something we needed in order to solve this case. More often than not, desperation hindered cases more than helped them. I was probably more aware of that fact than most, thanks to my rookie years. But I still relied on my idea and didn’t want to blurt out a loose plan without having thought everything through.

Liam and Noah sat patiently, allowing me to think through every possible flaw within the plan. Jacob, however, had the patience of a two-year-old and wasn’t having the whole me keeping him waiting thing.

“Out with it, White,” Jacob said with a growl on the edge of his words.

I glared at him. “Just for that, I’m going to make you wait longer. And if you continue to keep bossing me around, you can wait outside. Liam or Noah could fill you in later.”

He simply stared at me.

I quirked an eyebrow, waiting for him to spit out his next retort. When he didn’t, I sucked in a breath and said, “My coven sister, Toni, may help. She has a talent for locating missing things. I would do the spell, but not on my own. If I had more power and more of my coven behind me, we just might be able to pull it off.”

“Uh, one problem,” Noah said, pulling my attention to him. “My sister isn’t a thing, she’s a person. If the spell is intended for lost items, how well could something like that work on a person?”

I settled my attention on him. “I understand your sister is a person and not a thing, Noah, but she is lost. Which is why I had said more power and my coven backing me.”

Liam asked, “So, the spell is not guaranteed to work?”

I shook my head. “Really, nothing is ever guaranteed. Especially when it comes to magic. Timing is everything and there are a lot of moving parts. And I’m sure there is a caveat to the whole thing. But since these types of spells are not my forte, I won’t know what that is until I have a chance to sit and talk with Toni about everything.”

“Ain’t that the truth,” Jacob muttered under his breath, briefly casting his gaze to Noah and then back to me.

I huffed at him. “Care to elaborate?”

He frowned at me as though I should have known what he was referring to. “The nothing is guaranteed part.”

“Well, at least we could say we tried,” I said, words coming out clipped. I didn’t understand what his issue was, or where he got off judging me because I did what I needed to do in order to heal. But if he was going to have something negative to say about my plan, he had a whole other side of me just waiting to bite his head off. “What’s your problem with me going to my coven?”

“Nothing,” Jacob said with a shrug.

“Bull shit,” I said. “Spit it out.”

“It’s not your coven I am having an issue with,” he said.

“Well,” I started, “put your problem to the side and focus on the case.”

I picked up my mug and took a sip of it. As far as easing the throbbing sensation that had filled my head since he and Noah showed up, my coffee was failing me. But the warmth from the drink helped to ease the ache in my shoulders and brought me a little comfort.
