“I don’t have an update. If we needed one, we would have gotten one,” Jacob finally said.

“That sits well with you?” I asked. “Either that or you’re lying. My bet is on the latter.”

“It doesn’t need to sit well with me. It is what it is,” he ran his fingers through his long, black hair.

I nodded. “Uh-huh.”

I wasn’t convinced. He showed me his cards when it came to Savannah. He cares a lot more about her than he was trying to let on. He had to be bothered by the silence and lack of news. Of course, he could have been getting some sick, twisted enjoyment over seeing my discomfort with the lack of knowing.

“No news is good news,” he muttered.

I snorted. “Whatever makes you sleep better. I, however, can’t sleep. This place is too claustrophobic for my taste, and I am a ‘see for yourself’ kind of guy. Not only that, but you are way too loud for anyone in a three-block radius to get any sort of decent rest.”

“You’re incredibly emotional for a dragon as well,” he added. “Mommy didn’t show you enough affection. Or was it daddy?”

I chuckled sarcastically. “You really don’t want to be on my bad side with this. I have no qualms over leaving myself if I need to. Besides, you read the tabloids. No mommy or daddy to speak of.”

“You leaving this room is going to go over so well,” he said, words thick with warning.

This guy was so cold-shouldered, that he wasn’t going to give in and relieve me of some of my misery. I had no idea what I had done to him to make him react this way toward me, but it didn’t matter. Lying on the bed wasn’t helping. Waiting for sleep was a joke. I was too worried about my sister and Savannah.

My hands clenched the edge of the mattress on either side of me. It was taking everything in me not to run through the door immediately. The urge to leave was growing stronger and becoming harder to fight.

Jacob huffed. “She was late checking in. Liam went to check on her. He found her and took her home. But there hasn’t been a sound from this phone in hours. Now you know all I know.”

His voice was resigned. Maybe this was a truce? I seriously doubted it, but it was still more than I had before. Unfortunately, the news did little to settle my mind or ease the anxiety flowing through my system.

I started to pace the room. “We have to go find out if she’s okay.”

“No, we don’t,” Jacob said. “Sit down.”

I shook my head. “I can’t.”

I started to formulate a plan. One that would take me out of this room and in front of Savannah. At least I would find out she was okay. That might let me sleep.

“Sit down,” Jacob said again, this time firmer.

“I have to know,” I said and headed for the door.

Jacob growled and jumped in between me and the door. His eyes were wide with rage, and he spat a little as he said, “Sit your pampered, pretty boy ass down or I will make you.”

I stared at the man in front of me… deep into his eyes. My lips stretched into a smirk. A certain eerie calm came over me that I normally got when I was about to lose my shit on something or someone. “I didn’t think you batted for our team.”

Jacob growled and pushed me farther away from the door. I grunted and pushed back.

My anger quickly got the better of me on the best of days. Even more so on the worst of days. This time was one of those times. One more push and I swung a fist for Jacob’s jawline. Shockingly, I missed. He was a lot lither than I had given him credit for. Then Jacob tackled me to the ground.

I wiggled free and stepped out the door before turning around and facing him, still on the floor with a shocked expression on his face. “I am going to Savannah’s to check on her. I would feel responsible for her getting hurt too. If you’re so damned concerned about your job and my safety, you can follow me. Otherwise, I’m leaving. Even if that means bloodied up.”

I stood there for several seconds waiting on him to make up his mind about what he was going to do.

“You really don’t care that you should stay put?”

I gripped the railing on the outside of the hotel room’s walkway, getting ready to launch myself over it if I had to. “I care about Savannah and my sister. Since I can’t very well check on my sister, checking on her best friend is a close second. Now, are you coming or not?”

“And then what?” he asked.

“Then I can sleep,” I said.
